Children in day surgery
Day surgery is the ideal for many paediatric
surgical procedures, with well-documented psychological benefits for children.
The principles for adults apply just as much to children, with a few crucial
differences. Specially trained anaesthetic, surgical and nursing staff are
required, and children should be kept separate from adults with designated
children only days or areas. A visit to the DSU beforehand to prepare the child
and the provision of child-friendly areas and toys set the scene for stress free
surgery. Liaison with community services and the GP is essential, particularly
for more major procedures. Children with single parents or in poor housing may
need special assessment as to suitability.
