Some patients with advanced HIV disease develop liver function test
abnormalities consistent with cholangitis. Endoscopic retrograde
cholangiopancreatography in these patients reveals changes which are similar to
sclerosing cholangitis (Fig. 9.9). The aetiology of this condition is not
clearly established but it is thought that the inflammation has an infective
basis, perhaps cytomegalovirus. Surgical treatment is not required.
