Im Schneckengang * in German means "At a Snail's Pace"
My memories tell me with polio, arthritis and weak legs all of my adult life this phrase fits me like a glove. I was not familiar with this phrase until Laurine Schneck Williams and Henry Robert Schneck invited my family and I to the 150th anniversary celebration for the town of Schnecksville, Pennsylvania. They took on the daunting task of inviting all of the Schnecks in the United States that they could get in touch with.
As part of their continuing genealogy studies of all things Schneck, they produced a book entitled "Im Schneckengang" which was available for sale. It is the source of much of the Schneck-a-bilia on these web pages. They adopted "Im-Schneckengang-At a Snail's Pace" to describe the glacial speed that genealogy research entails. It also accurately describes the blinding speed records I'm setting getting this web site together.
I am eternally grateful to Laurine and Henry for getting me interested in my own family tree. In the two years following the anniversary celebration, I was able to find over 600 members of my relatives and ancestors. They are contained in my Schnecks of Wausau Genealogy . -The majority of my Schneck relatives are concentrated in the Wausau, Wisconsin area and I could find no hard evidence of a connection to the Schnecksville, Pennsylvania Schnecks.
I did however find out I am the maternal great great great grandson of James C. Smith of York, Pennsylvania, a signer of the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America, but no Pennsylvania Schnecks.
I know "Im Schneckengang" is right on the money.
