PROPER FIELD CARE

The most important factor a quality mount is how you take care of your trophy in the field.

Shoulder Mounts: DO NOT cut the throat or drag the animal that you’re planning on having mounted. Make sure that you leave enough hide on the animal to assure a full shoulder mount. If you can’t bring the hide in right away, within 24 hours, keep it as cool as possible. Leave the head on the animal, unless you are absolutely sure how to skin the head area of the cape.

Birds: If you hunt with a dog. DO NOT allow the dog to retrieve the bird you want mounted. Examine the bird to make sure it is acceptable for mounting. Then place cotton or other absorbent material in the beak. Next, either roll a newspaper into a funnel shape, or use a leg of a pair of pantyhose and place the bird headfirst into the funnel or pantyhose. Keep the bird in a cool place and bring it to the taxidermist shop as soon as possible. Take special care not to bend or ruffle any feathers.
