Cunningham Falls State Park is located just west of Thurmont, MD and north of
Frederick on Rt 15 and Rt. 77. Catoctin Mtn. Park is in the Federal system. At
one time they were one park. But the Fed deeded the portion south of Rt. 77 to
the state. The Fed retains control of the northern portion because it borders
Camp David. Since 9/11 access to some portions of Catoctin may be restricted for
security reasons.

Cunningham Falls doesn't amount to much on this late Summer's day in 2001. It
had been a dry Summer. It is the highest falls in Maryland. But I don't find it
very impressive.

Iron furnace is located on the east side of Rt 15 near the Manor Area.

The campground in the William Houck Area is quite nice. Some sites have electric.
The sites are rather large and nicely "landscaped" by Mother Nature.
As with most things in the central/eastern part of Maryland, it is crowded. The hiking
trails are so-so.

A view from the overlook in Catoctin Mtn. Park. I actually prefer the trails
in Catoctin. Watch out for Timber
Rattlers. They are suppose to be common. But I have not encountered any to date.
