What Do We Have Here?

A printing set! And a pencil box - got's lots of pencils in it! No, actually what we have here is a collection of things from the movie you might not have noticed. Editing/continuity errors, interesting that gets put in the margins or the background and usually doesn't get its fair share of screen time, hidden messages from Satan (not really), etc., etc. You know, all the lovely things that make a movie worth watching even after you've memorized all the lines including stage directions. Not all of the things mentioned here will be visible in all versions of the movie. There are some differences between the '86 release and the '99 release, and when the tapes are "formatted to fit your television screen", some of the things in the margins get cut off (In case you're wondering, I'm using the wide-screen option on the DVD as a reference for this list). This list is by no means complete, and I would love to have people e-mail me with things they've noticed that are not found here. You'll find the addy at the bottom of the page.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

1) If you look closely as the animated owl changes to the real owl and flies in front of the bridge in the park to land on the obelisk, you can catch sight of the real owl's white tether trailing from its ankle.

2) Sarah must have an industrial strength hair dryer hidden away somewhere in her room. How else could she have managed to dry her hair so quickly after coming in from the pouring rain?

3) If you're still here, then you have probably already noticed this, but I'll belabour the point anyway. Many of the things that Sarah encountered in her adventures are in her room at the beginning of the movie. There is a stuffed animal Firey and Sir Didymus doll, a music playing figurine that Sarah comes to resemble during the ball within the ball, Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are" (the inspiration for Ludo) as well as a stuffed Ludo doll, a wooden labyrinth game, a bookend that resembles Hoggle, the Escher print on her wall, and pictures and a statue that resemble Jareth.

4) Speaking of pictures, did you notice that some of the pictures stuck around the frame of Sarah's mirror, are the exact same ones to be found in her scrapbook?

5) Sarah's teddy bear, Lancelot, seems to have a mind of its own. When Sarah puts him on the bed to start telling her story to Toby, it is face down with its feet toward the crib. The camera cuts away, and when it returns to Sarah, Lancelot seems to have disappeared. It is not until Sarah gets up and heads toward the mirror that we see Lancelot was far behind her, face up, his feet toward the lamp. The next time we see him, Lancelot's feet are still in the same orientation, but he is now near the edge of the bed. The next change comes after the goblins have taken Toby. Lancelot is now lying completely flat on his back with his feet facing the crib, at a right angle to the edge of the bed. The final change is seen over Jareth's shoulder as he does that nifty thing with the crystal. Lancelot is now angled at the lamp again, and his right arm and leg are in the air.

6) Not a mistake, but something nifty nonetheless - When Sarah comes in to check on Toby after he stops crying, the rocking horse by the window is swaying gently back and forth.

7) This is probably the first of the mistakes that those who only have access to the tapes will not be able to see. When the crystal forms in Jareth's hand, the face that's reflected in it is Jareth's face in the final confrontation scene.

8) Again, not necessarily a mistake, but too . . . interesting to leave out. Look at Jareth's face just as he throws the snake at Sarah. It is easily one of the most doofy expressions I have ever seen in my life.

9) In the long shot of the Labyrinth right after Jareth says, "It's further than you think . . ." you can see Hoggle at the bottom of the screen, doing his business in the pool.

10) Just before Jareth fades away, you can see his reflection in the clock behind him. This is the only clock throughout the movie in which this occurs.

11) When there is a close-up of the little faerie, you can see her wings fluttering through her body.

12) There is a lovely little broach on the right side of Sarah's blouse.

13) When Sarah throws her little temper tantrum, she hits wall where the opening is supposed to be.

14) Although it makes one of the most balley cool effects in the movie, even if Sarah hadn't been able to see the opening in the wall head on before she walked through it, she should have been able to see it from the side as she walked down the corridor. Maybe we can explain this and the previous error away by saying that the opening didn't come into existence until the worm mentioned it.

15) For wide-screen viewers, in the long-shot as Sarah is approaching the pillar in the stone maze with all the hands pointing down different paths, in the upper right hand corner, Jareth's face can be seen on one of the walls.

16) Sarah has a magic lipstick case. Even though she threw it down on her vanity in the beginning of the movie when she was talking to her father, it somehow reappeared in her pocket.

17) In the throne room of the castle, several goblins directly from "The Goblin Companion" can be identified, including Doggelthorpe, and Roem Baaba.

18) There is a crystal ball on the end of Jareth's riding crop.

19) There are 54 minutes in a Labyrinthian hour. Want an explanation?

20) At the end of the "Dance Magic" sequence, in the long shots, it is obviously a Toby doll that Jareth is slinging about.

21) The trees and stone markers in the background of the Alph and Ralph scene keep shifting (kudos to the production team for that).

22) After Sarah meets the worm, she always chooses the right path when confronted with a choice (Alph and Ralph, and the Knockers). Come to think of it - she always chooses right, except for when the worm had to correct her.

23) There are bones on the floor of the oubliette.

24) In the Underground's underground, when Jareth reveals himself as the goblin beggar, he throws down his disguise twice. The first time, he angrily throws it behind him to the left. In the next shot, you can see the blue robe on his shoulder. Later he pulls it off his shoulder and brings it across the front of his body to throw it to the floor on his right. It is no longer there, however, when Hoggle and Sarah start running from the Cleaners.

25) There's a snake coiled around Jareth's left arm (a piece of jewelery - not a real one). It can be seen wrapped around his wrist, and around his shoulder guard.

26) The symbol Jareth wears around his neck is repeated in the belt buckle of his brown leather coat.

27) When Sarah and Hoggle are climbing the latter out of the underground, a rung on the ladder breaks just a Hoggle is talking about the Bog of Eternal Stench (foreshadowing? ooooohhhh!). When the camera cuts to show the rung clattering to the floor, Jareth's face can be seen in the lower right side of the screen, just next to the ladder.

28) Look at the ground below the urn through which Hoggle and Sarah emerge into the hedge maze. It doesn't touch the ground, and when Sarah hops out of the urn, we can see her feet behind it from underneath - all of which means that there's no connecting passage from the ground to the urn. Must be majic!

29) There's a nifty sundial in the Wiseman's garden (and if any of you can tell me what time it reads, I will love you forever).

30) The throne on which the Wiseman sits is composed of massive stone books with nifty titles such as "All" and "Everything".

33) Another Jareth sighting for the wide-screen viewers. When Hoggle is running away from Ludo's howling, he murmers to himself "Get through the Labyrinth. Get through the Labyrinth. One thing's for sure - she'll never get through the Labyrinth!" In the lng shot, Jareth's face can be seen in the foliage in the upper left hand corner.

34) Look at the ground when Sarah starts looking for Ludo in the Firey's Forest. You can faintly see the square patch through which Ludo fell, and how neatly Sarah avoids stepping onto it.

35) In the first chorus of "Chilly Down," during the part that goes "When your thing gets wild" (I'm not making this up. If you want to see the lyrics, go here), the blue-eyed Firey points to his **blush** lower region. Tonnes of fun for the kiddies, eh?

36) While plunging down the chute toward the Bog of Eternal Stench, Sarah falls out twice (of the chute - what were you thinking?!?!?). First, she's right behind Hoggle, and then the camera cuts away to show the dwarf grabbing onto a rod to keep from falling in. When the camera cuts back to the chute, Sarah is falling out of the chute again.

37) As Sarah and Hoggle edge along the ledge above the BOES, every time he makes a reference to their friendship (1 - "You kissed me." 2- fumbling with indecision about giving Sarah the peach), the ledge crumbles beneath them.

38) In the wide-screen version, during the long-shot after Sarah and Hoggle fall out of the chute, Jareth's face can be seen in the stones of the wall surrounding the BOES. It can be seen again in the long-shot as Sarah is pulling Hoggle up onto the ledge.

39) Another error to be found in the wide-screen veiwing - when the ledge crumbles out from under Sarah and Hoggle after he says, "You kissed me," at the top of the overheard camera shot one can see the boom mike hanging down into the frame. Oops.

40) At he beginning of the battle with Ludo, Sir Didymus' staff bends when he hits the beast on the knee.

41) Even though it appeared to have no flat sides while rolling to the rescue, the rock that Ludo calls to catch Sarah before she falls into the Bog is perfectly level when she stands on it.

42) As Ludo walks across the stones, his feet bounce up and down.

43) I'm going to take this moment to climb up on my soapbox (because this is my page, and I can do anything I want to here ). Now, a lot of people I've spoken with concerning Labyrinth claim that Sarah's shoes will smell bad forever. I can see their reasoning, but I am also inclined to disagree. Certainly the rocks across which she walked were subjected to the Bog sludge, but that does not necessarily mean that the smell is communicative. If we were to suppose that this were true, then it would follow that Ludo and Ambrosius would both smell bad for the rest of their lives, and no matter how lovable they are, I'd imagine that the BOES smells even worse than Blech! root, which is completely intolerable (see "The Goblin Companion"), and so the others would not have been able to stand their company (except Sir Didymus, maybe). The sludge got on the rocks, so the rocks will smell bad forever, or until they crumble into dust, but by the time Sarah stepped on the rocks, the sludge had sloughed off. So, since she stepped on the rock, and not the Bog itself, the smell needn't necessarily have latched onto her shoes. Besides, there's nothing to say that Sarah's shoes didn't smell bad before the whole thing started .

44) A lot of the time that Sir Didymus is on Ambrosius' back, his lips don't move while he's speaking.

45) Right before Sarah passes into the Ball within the Ball, there is a shot of her sprawled out on the ground. The peach that Hoggle had given her is beside her, a few inches from her fingertips. Yet, when she wakes up in the Vast Track of Rottenness, the peach is in her hand again.

46) In all three crystals that Sarah sees before she goes to the Ball, there are scenes of dancers (this is much easier to see in the DVD version).

47) One of my favorite aspects of the Ball within the Ball (you know, aside from how incredibly romantic that would be, the beautiful music, the fantastic costumes, and the really cool set) is the Golden Girl. There is one masquerader in the Ball that is not wearing a mask. Instead she is painted entirely gold, and she wears a sarong-type garment. The first time she appears is in the slow pan across the ball before we see Sarah. The Golden Girl is dancing by herself on a raised dais in the background. Next, just after Jareth disappears for the first time, she shows up in the spot he just vacated, proffering a tray of something or other. Then, as Sarah hunts through the Ballroom for the elusive king, Golden Girl can be seen behind her, throwing confetti into the air. She later shows up leaning on one of those bizaar chandeliers. After that, there is one shot where a whole group of masqueraders all turn at once and look at Sarah. The Golden Girl's face can be seen in the lover right of that shot. Later we see her again, with her back to the camera (then that masquerader laughs at Sarah). As Sarah and Jareth begin dancing, the Golden Girl and be seen dancing by herself behind a couple of swirling masqueraders (just for an instant, and it's mainly just her arm). She's part of the leering crowd just before Sarah breaks free. In the last shot in which she is visible, her reflection is cast just behind Sarah's upon the inner surface of the Ball just before Sarah smashes it with a chair (she's nowhere to be found when the angle changes to show the ballroom falling apart).

48) One of the other cool things about the Ball within the Ball is how quickly the masqueraders seem to be able to change locations (that was me being slightly sarcastic - this phenomenon can be explained by editing). For example - when Sarah first catches sight of HRH in all his splendour, there is a masquerader with dark red hair fawning on him on the right, holding up a mirror. That same masquerader can be seen passing behind Sarah when the cameral cuts back to her, and in the very next shot, the same girl is dancing with Jareth. That girl really gets around!

49) There are at least 4 junk people in the Vast Tract of Rottenness. The first, is of course, Agnes - the Junklady that does all the talking with Sarah. There is one that can be seen in the background drinking a bottle of milk with a Tiffany lampshade on its back when the camera cuts to Sarah right after Agnes shows her Lancelot. When the angle changes again to show the handoff of Lancelot between Agnes and Sarah, one junk person behind Sarah with pots on its back, and one behind Agnes (you can only see a pile of junk moving - not really the person). The latter two can also be seen (perhaps more easily) in the shot when Sarah enters the junk mound to find her room.

50) When Hoggle is in the control seat of Humongus, you can see the string to the harness to keep the actress from falling.

51) As Hoggle jumps from Humongus to the ground, the armour on the shoulder of the leviathan gives way under his weight.

52) The figure of the bell ringer on the clock in the throne room bears a remarkable resemblance to Hoggle.

53) There is a clock on the wall of the building behind the peeing Hoggle fountain in the plaza outside the castle.

54) As Sarah, Hoggle, and Ludo are running away from the goblin army, one goblin in a window manages to hit Ludo on the head with the blade of an oversized scimitar.

56) Just after Sir Didymus falls from Ambrosius' back (right after winning the jousting volley with the goblin), the ball on top of his staff falls off. When we next see the staff, the ball is back on.

57) There are cool embellishments to the architecture in the Goblin City that look like the faces of screaming goblins.

58) When Ludo pushes through the top of the Goblin house, just as he pushes a goblin with a dagger in its mouth over the edge, there is a small flying goblin right passing right above him.

59) Although the gates were opened when Sir Didymus was jousting with the goblins, they were closed just before the rocks came pouring in.

60) If you look closely enough, you can sometimes see the rods that connect groups of rocks as they roll together.

61) One of the rocks rolls over a chicken (the chicken gets right back up and walks away) on its way to break through the goblins that set themselves up like ninepins.

62) After Sarah and her crew come out of the house, Hoggle picks up a sword. He drops it right before they head into the castle.

63) There are 2 milk bottles on the left side of the door to the castle.

64) Embedded in the right door to the castle is a smaller door.

65) In the final confrontation scene, when Jareth conjures up a crystal to tempt Sarah one last time, the movement of his lips as he speaks, and the movement of the lips of his reflection in the crystal are out of sync (in order to catch this, you have to tear your eyes away from Jareth's face for a second).

66) At the very end, when Sarah is sitting at her vanity, putting her childish things away, there's the scene when her Labyrinthian friends appear behind her bed, as reflected in the mirror. This follows the same principle as the opening in the wall of the stone maze. Although we can see them from an angle, Sarah should not be able to see them head on as she is, unless her wall majically moved to reflect her bed in the vanity's mirror.
