May Notes To Remember

--Congratulations To Our Big Winners!--For group 2, fifth grader Stephen Sonntag won first place in the American Legion Essay contest for the state of Maryland. His essay will go on to the national judging. For group 1, third grader Lauren Morris won third place in the state judging. Congratulations should also go to their teachers who have worked hard on developing their writing skills and also to the parents who help at home.

--Field Trips--Each classes' large field trip will be upcoming. Students are required to dress in traditional uniform (shirt & tie, blouse and tie, skirt and jumper, trousers). Without exception, our teachers are always complimented by the public on how neatly dressed our students are on the field trips and what a great impression that makes. Let's keep up that reputation! Parents are asked to keep in mind that they also represent our school, as they dress that day to accompany their child. The only exception to this is when our students attend an environment trip to one of the Elms sites. Each class is then given a recommended dress guide for the day that will be provided prior to the trip via the classroom teacher.

--Home School Meeting--Our terrific band, under the direction of Mrs. Diana Morse, will be presenting their spring concert the night of Home-School meeting- May 15. Please plan on coming to enjoy the great progress they have made. We will also be having the elections for next year's officers at this meeting -- make your vote count and attend!

--Extra Spirit Day--Please note that Fun Day is Also a Spirit Day.

--Relay Races--Each class has a specific time for their races. If your child has been selected to participate, you will recieve that time from the teacher. Historically, our school is in the top three or four places through the fourth grade races so we do have a chance of doing well if students who have been selected to race attend the races. It is very hard for students to do well if they have to run 3 or 4 races to make up for no-shows. If your child is chosen, please make every effort to attend and help our school make a great showing. If your child isn't running, please come anyhow and cheer us on!

--Book Fair--Please note the dates of our book fair. This is an excellent way to provide your child with good books to keep his or her reading skills sharp during the summer months.

--Please Note--Our final day of school is June 8th. As it is traditionally done, we will have the final awards ceremony following the 10 am Mass and students will be dismissed from the church. All family members are welcomed to attend the Mass and ceremony.

--Thanks for the Thanks--The faculty would like to thank the Home School Association for the wonderful Teacher Appreciation Day festivities on Friday, April 27. The day began with each teacher being greeted at his or her door by a sign expressing appreciation for all that they do for the students. Later on, flowers and a card arrived for each teacher. At 11:30, volunteers showed up at the teachers' doors so that they could go and enjoy a wonderful luncheon together in the library. Teachers especially appreciated the 'to go' boxes since there was so much delicious food that they couldn't eat all of it. The teachers truly appreciated the most generous gesture.

--PEP Program--On Wednesday, May 2nd, Holy Angels-Sacred Heart School was the 25th local school to adopt the Personal Excellence Partnership (PEP) program offered by the Naval Air Station Patuxent River. Through this Navy-education partnership program, military and civilian personnel volunteer each week at local schools during work hours to mentor and tutor students. It is the programs objective to assist in the education of those enrolled at our school. This partnership will be an invaluable asset not only to the children but the faculty, as well as, the community. In general, the goal is to provide tutoring in academic subjects, classroom asistance, assisting students with special projects or special needs, and mentoring students or assisting with research projects. Cathy Bailey will be our Command Coordinator for the school for the PEP program. If you have any questions, or if you work on the base and would like to know how you can volunteer, please give Cathy a call at 301-757-0409.

--HOP-A-THON--Thank you for your participation in this Lenton Service Project. You and your children raised $1,303.00 for Muscular Dystrophy. Wow! as Monsignor Brady would say. That is a sizable amount of money and I am very pleased to have been a part of this worthwhile project. Thanks so very much! Mrs. Ellis
