The History of Holy Angels Sacred Heart School

In the summer of 1926, Father Bernard Pohlman, S.J. was instrumental in bringing four Sisters of Charity of Nazereth to Bushwood for the purpose of establishing parochial schools in both Holy Angels and Sacred Heart parishes.

On September 16th of that same year, Sister Ambrose and Sister Domitilla opened Holy Angels School in the parish hall with an enrollment of sixteen students. Sister Domitilla taught the sixth, seventh and eighth grades in one end of the hall, Miss Bessie Gibson taught the third, fourth, and fifth grades in the other end, and Sister Ambrose taught the first and second grades on the stage. Also on September 16, Sister Redempta and Sister Mary Louise opened Sacred Heart School in their parish hall with an enrollment of seventeen students.Sister Maxima and Sister Gerard were among the earliest teachers in the two schools.

By 1929 Holy Angels had built a frame school building consisting of six classrooms with a wide corridor and a basement for extra space. The faculty had grown to three Sisters and one lay teacher, Miss Elizabeth Ellis. At the present time, this original building is occupied by grades Pre-kindergarten through three. In 1931 Sacred Heart built its frame building consisting of three classrooms and a wide corridor.

In the fall of 1959, the two schools were combined and became Holy Angels Sacred Heart School. The original Sacred Heart School was torn down a few months later. In 1960 the original Holy Angels Schools building was enlarged and this wing is presently being used as classrooms for the fourth, fifth, and six grades.

The Sisters of Charity continued to staff the consolidated school through June of 1973. Among those Sisters was one of the area's own, Sister Mary Domitilla, who taught in the school from 1969 through 1972. When the order of sisters was no longer able to provide the needed faculty, the two parishes continued to operate the school with an all lay faculty until 1977 when Father William F. Goode became administrator, principal, and science teacher. He served in those capacities until June of 1994. During the years 1979 through 1983 Brother Lloyd, C.F.X also taught in the school. In 1994 Monsignor John Brady became administrator and Mrs. Nancy Bucior became the principal and teaches some of the Religion classes.
