Of Puerto Rican origin, Cecilia Reyes never wanted to be a mutant, let alone an X-Men, going so far as to refuse Xavier's recruitment efforts in the past. Her only ambition, since the age of six when her father died in her arms as a result of a shooting, was to become a doctor. Consequently, she became a resident at Our Mother of Mercy Hospital (dubbed No Mercy by its doctors and nurses) and her life assumed some semblance of normality, as she pretended to be human.

Unfortunately, at age 25, as a result of Operation: Zero Tolerance, her mutancy was exposed by Bastion's Sentinels, forcing her into the open. She was saved by Iceman, and returned with him and Marrow to the mansion, where she assisted in saving Cyclops' life.

Despite finding a place in the team, and in the heart of Dr McCoy, Cecilia remained resolute - she would return to her residency, and pick up the pieces of her life. However, the anti-mutant sentiments of the hospital administrators, her patients and colleagues made it impossible for her to go back to No Mercy.

Nevertheless, realizing 'that what the world needs is another doctor, not another hero' and that her psioplasmic shield would prove of little use to the team, Cecilia started a private practice in Salem Center, where she continued to pursue her dream and act as a part-time member of the X-Men.

However, when an injured Kurt Wagner sought her medical expertise, she was forced into confrontation with a Neo, who she killed almost by accident. Consumed by guilt, Kurt coerced her to follow him as it was no longer safe in her clinic. Unfortunately, the Neo found them and attacked them as a form of vengeance for Jaegar's death. Cornered and desperate, Cecilia had no choice but to take an experimental drug called Rave, because the X-Men came to save her too late.

Because it was so highly addictive, Cecilia had to undergo the difficult process of trying to purge the drug from her system by going cold turkey. As could be expected, this is was almost impossible, as she had to suffer hallucinations and physical agony. To make matters worse, since it was targeted directly at mutants, Rave crippled her control of her forcefield yet caused her to want to use it the entire time. Cecilia chose to use the Danger Room to keep that longing in check and to burn the toxins out of her system. Although she was ultimately able to beat the addiction with some guidance from Xavier, she almost killed him, herself and several other X-Men.

After recovering from the effects of the Rave, Cecilia returned to her practice in Salem Center. She, however, did come to the mansion to work on her powers, and even stayed over some nights. On one of these occasions, she caught Piotr trying to inject himself with the cure for the Legacy Virus, which would kill him but make it active and release it into the atmosphere. She was unable to stop him, and he died while she was doing CPR on him.

She has not been seen in the X-Books since, but it can be assumed that she has returned to her practice in Salem Center and is there at the moment.
