DREAMPOP, SHOEGAZER
ETHEREAL

Dreampop is a genre of alternative rock that emerged during the late 80s and early 90s, most notably in England. The term can be first attributed to A.R. Kane, who coined the term to describe their approach to music-making. Alex Ayuli of A.R. Kane kindly provides:

"Rudy and I came up with the term dreampop while talking to a journalist called Simon Reynolds. We were telling him that a lot of our music was inspired by dreams - that the actual melodies and other components were specifically 'heard in our dreams' and we were trying to interpret/recreate the moods and emotions that were subsequently evoked. At the same time we were trying to put them into the context of 'pop' music. Hence dreampop."

In more general terms, the dominant feature of dreampop music is the crafting of an atmospheric ambience using combinations of treated guitar, feedback, noise, tape loops and breathy vocals. While the methods employed by various dreampop bands have varied - from the sonorous beauty of Slowdive and the harmonious pop of Lush to the droning feedback of My Bloody Valentine - the resulting texture of the music is such that all of the instruments blend into a mellifluous whole.
The term shoegazer was the invention of the vitriolic British music press and referred to the tendency of many of these bands to perform in a somewhat motionless style - staring at the floor while on stage. Also symptomatic of the media backlash was the needlessly sarcastic "scene that celebrates itself" tag, given due to the willingness of some of these acts to frequent each other's gigs.
Although the terms dreampop and shoegazer are often used interchangeably, it might be said that bands commonly referred to using the shoegazer tag (eg. Catherine Wheel, Ride, Chapterhouse) perhaps have more in common with indie/alternative rock, pop or dance music than do some of the more transcendental dreampop artists. Many other titles for the genre have been mooted including noise-pop, bliss rock, ether-pop and wooze.
