Oberhasli Dairy Goats

The Oberhasli Breed

The Oberhasli is a pure breed of dairy goat originally developed near Bern, Switzerland, and is still found there in its pure form today. In much of Switzerland the Oberhasli are known as Oberhasli-Brienzer.

Oberhasli were first imported to this country in the early nineteen hundreds, but those genetic lines were not kept pure. The last importation and the one that our purebreds of today trace back to was made in 1936 by Dr. H. O. Pence of Kansas City, Missouri.

Thanks to the hard work of the members of the Oberhasli Breeders of America , in 1978, over forty years after the last importation, the Oberhasli became the sixth official breed of the American Dairy Goat Association.

The Oberhasli is a medium sized goat, vigorous and alert in appearance. Its color is chamoisee (shades of bay, ranging from light to a deep red bay with the latter most desirable.) Chamoisee Oberhasli are beautifully marked, with two black stripes down the face from above each eye to a black muzzle, the forehead is nearly all black, black stripes from the base of each ear coming to a point just back of the poll and continuing along the neck and back as a dorsal stripe to the tail; a black belly and udder; black legs below the knees and hocks; ears black inside and bay outside.

Bucks often have more black on the head than does, black whiskers, and black hair along the shoulders and lower chest with a mantle of black along the back.

Oberhasli have beautiful dished faces and wide set eyes. They are truly a distinctive bred of dairy goat. Their pleasant personalities match their beautiful appearance.

Li'l Rascals History

Our first Oberhasli doe, 3*M Cardinal Lanes Imp Wanda, was purchased from Jim Tuckwood of Cardinal Lane Farms, Boscobel, Wisconsin. We fell in love with this beautiful breed of goats and began to breed and raise them under the Li'l Rascals name in the early 1990's. The purchase of our first buck, *B Badger Hill Victor, bred by Karen Weiderholt of Hazel Green, Wisconsin, helped our herd to move forward in both conformation and milk production.

Due to family obligations and an impending cross-country move, the herd was sold in 1996. The Oberhasli were sorely missed and in 1998 we purchased several does with bloodlines very similar to those of our original herd, from Tom and Jean Craig of Hartwood Acres, Hartwood, Virginia, to re-establish our Oberhasli herd. These does were bred to bucks owned by Lori Parsons of Snowy Acres, in East Berlin, Pennsylvania, in the winter of 1998 and the first Oberhasli kids were born on the farm in Maryland in the spring of 1999.
