One day, Arabesque was walking through the Junkyard. It was a sunny day- perfect for a sunbath! But Arie (As her friends called her) had other things on her mind. She had to get home- quick! If her owners found her in the junkyard again- ooooh!- Arie shuddered at the thought of her punishment. Perhaps a flea dip, or being locked in the laundry room again. Not fun at all, especially for a kitten like Arie!
She forced her paws to walk faster to her home. As she passed Coricopat and Tantomile, who were sunbathing on the roof of a truck, Arie thought how nice it would be to have a twin. “My own best friend-all day long!” she thought. Her only friend, Mistoffelees, was always busy practising his magic. Arie had grown used to being alone or talking with her stern older brother, Munkustrap.
Arie never talked to the other kittens. Why? All they did was talk about Rum Tum Tugger and giggle about which of them would marry him! “Tugger is such a show-off!” she thought. “He’s not cute at all. I don’t understand what they see in him.” Arie didn’t care about Toms, so she got along better with the adults.
Arabesque slipped through the cat door of her owner’s house. All of the thinking she had done had worn her out, so she decided to take a quick nap. She curled up in her favorite place to sleep, the bathtub (unfilled, of course!) and drifted into kitty dreams.
