Welcome to Minerva DeLand Physical Education,winner of Sportsmedia's PE Award. Minerva DeLand is an overall wellness program with a strong emphasis in fitness. Each student is required to take two sections of Health and one section of swimming. Beyond those requirements, the students are given the opportunity to select activities. Each student is required to keep a portfolio of their written work. Written work includes fitness related homework, study guides, personal goals, dietary logs, and any activity related information.



The fitness component is taught by each teacher during that unit, regardless of the activity. Students are given instruction, homework and an opportunity to develop that particular component when applicable. For instance, when muscular strength is the component of emphasis, a student might get 5 minutes in the beginning of class to work on that component in what ever way they see fit. Another example of how we amalgamate fitness into our daily class activity is through written homework. Each teacher assigns an assignment consistent with the other teachers assignments. Therefore all the kids get the same information and the same amount of work.

In addition to the strong emphasis on fitness through activity. We also require all students to take 2 units of Health. The 2 health units are Chemical Use Prevention and Human Development.
