Memphis Gold featuring Charlie Sayles

Who's that harp player with the amp, playing for tips and burning up the street corner at Metro Center at lunchtime? That would be Charlie Sayles, an internationally recorded blues artist who still routinely appears in this totally solo (and somewhat scary) mode. Sayles also plays the usual lineup of local blues nightspots, for the past few years with the band Memphis Gold. Their sound is raw, funky and powerful, making them the best blues band in the DC area in many people's minds. They also play local and regional festivals and will be touring Japan this summer.

Sayles' repertoire includes classic covers, like Sonny Boy Williamson's "Bring It on Home to Me," as well as lots of originals. In contrast to his gritty electric-harp sound, Sayles' voice is comparatively smooth and his delivery relaxed. He seems to compose songs spontaneously - on the street you can hear him sing "Hey Mr. Businessman" with new lyrics every time.

Sayles has recorded primarily in England and has a loyal following there. In 1997, he was included on "Blues Harp Greats," as well as two other harp anthologies released by Rounder Records.

By the way, if you want to catch Sayles at lunchtime, on a sunny day go to the Metro Center exit at 13th and G streets (opposite Hecht's). If you get an outdoor seat at Lawson's, you've got a front-row spot at D.C.'s best lunchtime concert series.

Columbia Pike Blues Festival

South Arlington celebrates summer and the blues with a festival of music, food and family fun. This year's musical lineup features John Jackson, Charlie Sayles and Memphis Gold, the Hardway Connection, Sam Gunderson and Cactus Groove and the Blueshounds. The musicians are local artists, and more than a few of them are recognized nationwide and around the world.

Food is available from stands run by Columbia Pike restaurants. Families can enjoy the moon bounce and an "instrument petting zoo" for kids. The festival is presented by the Columbia Pike Revitalization Organization.
