Online Investment Info

Dear Alumni:

Based on the result of our survey, most members are interested in exchanging investment info/ideas to some degree. Here, for your convenience, I am putting together some sites with basic investment info, followed by a brief annotation or comment to each site.

Probably, a best place for you to get basic info and prepare youself for the start is the Motley Fool Finance Site ( The Motley Fool: Finance and Folly -- Main Page ). Go to its School category, there is a 13 Steps to investment class there. It begins with how to manage your credit card and cash, to basic concept such as P/E, to stock screen, and all the way to short and margin account. This should give you an overview of the procedure for you to get started. There are also similar info at other sites. For example, MSN investor site ( Welcome - MSN Investor ). Go to its Workshop site, you will find similar info.

To dive a little bit deeper, I would recommend you to go to Equity Analytics' site (Equity Analytics Academic Quality Information On Investing). There might be more info on this site than you would like it to have (the good thing of internet is a lot of info, and the bad thing is too much info). For your first visit, I would strongly recommend you to focus your visit on their Glossaries and All About Stock sites.

For daily news, data, and analysis tools, you can visit CBS Marekt Watch Site (CBS MarketWatch - CBS.MarketWatch.com). There are also news and analysis at Street Advisor's site (streetadvisor). And almost all internet portals also provide financial news.

There are many places you can get free online stock quote, usually 20 minutes delayed. The place I liked the most is Yahoo! Finance ( Yahoo! Finance ). It has stock quote, news, data. You actually could create your own portfolio, and monitor you portfolio at a daily base. Another site I like is StockMaster ( StockMaster Home Page ), which gives you quotes of a list of top stocks and funds. Of course, you can get the quote of a specific stock you choose. There is also a place that provides free real time quote ( Free Real Time Stock Quotes and News - Free Real Time.com ). I found this one is especially useful for checking the current price of a stock just before buying/selling it (if you use an online broker, most likely it will also provide this service).

This message is just to begin a discussion or information sharing. If most of you think it's helpful, we may consider a get-together discussion for each of you to share your own favorite sites and ideas with others on getting basic info online.
