10 Common Elements of Near-Death Experiences

A near-death experience(NDE) is an ostensibly preternatural event that a person experiences at the point of clinical death. The reason we're even aware of NDEs is that the people who have had them were brought back to life to tell about it. A 1991 Gallup Poll reported that 12 million Americans have had NDEs. Here are ten of the most commonly reported elements of the near-death experience:

Being in Another World or Realm
Blue FlameThis is one of the most commonly reported experiences. People feel that they have somehow crossed over into another plane or level of existence.

An Overwhelming Feeling of Peace
Blue FlameThe sence of peace, serenity, and contentment is so palpable to NDEers that many have actually chastised the doctor for pulling them away from the afterlife and bringing them back to life.

A Review of the Person's Life
Blue FlameThis is an archetypal experience of having your life flash before your eyes. This experience has also been reported by people who believed they were dying but who remained conscious throughout. People falling off buildings or drowning have often reported a life review.

An Out-of-Body Experience
Blue FlameMost NDEs begin with the person's astral body floating up and out of their physical body. Many report then feeling as if they could fly at will.

Accurate Visual Perception
Blue FlameNDEers can often relate details about things they could not have seen while clinically dead, including scenes and events that took place outside the emergency room or site. Perhaps an NDE allows us to tap into some sort of dormant sensory ability that we're not capable of accessing in the material world.

Encountering Other People
Blue FlameMany NDEers claim to have met and had conversations with deceased relatives and friends on the other side. To some, this is the most bittersweet aspect of a near-death experience.

Audible Voices and Sounds
Blue FlameNDEers can also often relate details about things they could not have heard while clinically dead. People often recount conversations that happened elsewhere, etc...

The Light
Blue FlameA wondrous and, to some, holy light often bathes and beckons people who have a near-death experience. Most feel that the light is the source of all things or is actually the physical manifestation of God.

The Tunnel
Blue FlameThis is often spoken of as one of the most common elements of a near-death experience, yet in fact only 9 percent of people report walking or floating down a tunnel.

Prerecognition
Blue FlamePrerecognition, or being able to predict the future, was the least-reported NDE element. Cynics look to this as proof that there is nothing even remotrly supernatural going on here, and thus, the paucity of genuinely provable phenomena. But 6 percent of all NDEers reported being able to know at least something of future events after their experience.

The above was taken from "The Odd Index" By Stephen J. Spignesi.
