Ever wish you could do all your genealogy research in your pajamas? It's still more of a dream than a reality, but there are quite a few resources we "mouse potatoes" can find online. Many more sites have parts of the census online than had it a year or so ago. This site contains the entire 1860 census for Wayne County, North Carolina with index. Other sites with the census online are noted below.

  • North Carolina USGenWeb Genealogy -- Lists all the various volunteers working throughout the state, and the hard-to-find resources they have posted online (census, mortality records, marriage and death records, etc.)
  • Alamance County-- Includes Mortality Schedules for 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880.
  • Albemarle County (1663-1670) -- Historical and research data on this county, which was abolished in 1739.
  • Alexander County-- Standard GenWeb site.
  • Alleghany County -- Standard GenWeb site.
  • Anson County -- Includes index of wills, plus offline census lookups (one name per request) will be performed by volunteers.

  • Bath County (1696-1705) -- Historic data, including historic photographs, for this county, which was abolished in 1739.
  • Beaufort County -- Includes offline look-ups for 1850 census and Marriages 1847-1909, plus an antique postcard collection featuring Bellhaven, NC.
  • Bertie County -- Includes information about major features of census in Bertie County.
  • Bladen County-- Offers online the 1793 Bladen County Tax List, 1781 Tax Exemption List, and 1790 census.
  • Brunswick County -- Standard GenWeb site.
  • Buncombe County -- Extensive list of offline look-ups seems to have disappeared.
  • Burke County -- Has some excellent lookups including 1850 census.
  • Bute County (1764-1779) -- Standard GenWeb site.

  • Carteret County -- Includes 1850 Mortality Schedule.
  • Caswell County -- Has a number of wills, deeds, marriages in archives.
  • Catawba County -- Lookups include 1850-1880 censuses.

  • Cherokee County -- Includes look-ups for 1840 and 1850 census.
  • Cherokee Reservation -- "Qualla Boundary," Townships: Big Cove, Birdtown, Painttown, Wolfton and Yellow Hill and tracts in Graham County and Cherokee County. Includes extensive list, with descriptions, of Cherokee rolls (a type of census), which are available for purchase in book form (not available online).
  • Chowan County -- Lookups include 1790 Chowan County Census (Rural) 1790 Chowan County Census (Rural and Town of Edenton) and 1800 Chowan County Census.

  • Cleveland County -- Includes 1850 census, and has lookups for 1860, 1870 and 1880 census.
