1860 U.S. Census
for Wayne County, North Carolina
The following web sites describe the information contained in the 1860 Census,
including the categories and columns in the Census and other details:
Census
Schedules -- U.S. Federal
The 1790-1890 Federal
Population Censuses: Catalog of National Archives Microfilm
Notes:
I've made a diligent effort to record all entries correctly, but I can't
promise that there are no typos or other errors in this transcription of
the census. For complete accuracy, consult the actual census at a Family
History Center near you or the National Archives or Library of Congress in
Washington, D.C.
The following abbreviations are used in this census:
Do = ditto
F. L. = Farm Laborer
Jno. = John
I have reproduced the entries exactly as they appear, when I could read them. When I couldn't, I used the following symbols:
* indicates that letter was illegible. This is sometimes followed by a guess as to what the name was, in brackets, for example, J*nie [Junie]. The guess I consider
most likely is first.
Ditto marks (") appear only where they appeared in the original.
Question marks in brackets [?] indicate I was not sure what the preceding word was.
A comma by itself indicates that nothing was written in that column.
The 1860 Census shown below includes only "Free Inhabitants," i.e., it does
not include slaves. The entries below represent the 14 columns of the census,
which are labeled as follows:
