The farm was sold by Smith, who was a
grandson of Charles and Sarah Speiran.
The farm was sold on September 14 1968 and
passed out of the SPEIRAN name.

All the Speiran Family played musical
instruments except for
Willie John (William John)he step danced.
Charles and his sons fiddled for dances
until well into the 1930's.

GOLDEN WEDDING
A happy and interesting event
took place on July 16, 1909 when
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Speiran
of Udney, Ontario celebrated their
50th golden wedding anniversary.
Mr. Charles Speiran was born in 1838,
in the township of Brock.
Mrs. Charles Speiran
(Sarah Carson Moore)
was born in the County
of Kerry, Ireland, in 1838,
she came to Canada when she
was sixteen years of age.
On July 16 1859,
she was united in marriage to
Mr. Charles Speiran.
They resided in Brock Township
until 1876, when they moved
to the township of Mara.
They were one of the earliest
settlers in that section of Ontario.
In politics Mr. Charles Speiran
is a Conservative,
and a staunch Orangeman.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Speiran were
brought up in the Church of England.
Upon moving to Mara, there was no
English church in the area,
they along with their family became
adherents of the Methodist church.
The family consists of eleven children,
seven sons and four daughters,
all of whom are married and settled in
the township except for Joseph Wesley Speiran
who died as a child on December 23 1874.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF MARRIAGE

The celebration of the
GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSAY for
Charles and Sarah Speiran took place
on the July 16 1909, It was held in
the form of a family gathering with all
of the sons, daughters and their families,
with the exceptions of 2 grandsons.
There are 29 grandchildren, and two
great-grandchildren.
Fifty-Four in all were present.

Supper was served in the spacious grounds,
after which several photographs were taken.
One picture of the four generations was taken.
A pleasant evening of music, recitations,
speeches, and songs was had by all.
One of the main features was the presentation
of two Morris chairs to the
father (Charles)and mother (Sarah),
by the family, when the following
was read by the rev. D.R. Clare:

Dear Father and Mother:
We, your children and grandchildren,
feel that we ought not to let
the present occasion pass without
some expression of love
and good wishes being conveyed to you.
We count it a pleasure and a privilege
to be permitted to greet
you on this auspicious occasion,
and once gathering ground
our commond threshold to enjoy
your company and renew the associations
of our early years.
We congratulate you upon the happy
termination of FIFTY YEARS of wedded life,
and rejoice in the privilege
of helping you to celebrate
your GOLDEN WEDDING day.
We feel that you have endured
many trials and borne many loads
of care for us, when we were young
and now we are pleased to be able
in a small degree to show our
appreciation of your love and care.
While the years have brought
so many changes, you have been spared to us,
that we might meet you on this day,
under such favourable circumstances.
You have had many blessings and
enjoyments not shared by others.
A kind Providence has spared you and us,
and we desire to make this a day of rejoicing
and thanksgiving for the mercies and blessings
we have enjoyed as a family.
We trust that you spare many
years still to enjoy each other's company,
and hope that as the sun often shines brightest
when nearing its setting, so your lives may be
brightest as life begins to draw to its close.
We hope that health and strength
may remain with you, and that as family
we may be spared to enjoy each other's
love and happiness for many years to come.
And that you may remember our greeting on this
occasion, we ask you to accept, and use everyday,
these chairs, which we as a family present
to you, trusting that they may be a
source of comfort to you for the remainder
of your days.

ACCIDENT

The new machinery introduced
into Mr. Speiran's sic mill
increased the power to such an
extent as to be too great
for the frame to bear,
the frame consequently gave
way upending the main shaft.
The cylinder bursted.
The escaping steam severly
scalded the engineer,
Mr. A. Speiran, on the neck.
