Linking your PC and Amiga

You link your Amiga and PC by a serial non-standard null modem cable.

Since this cable is non-standard it's very hard to get one, so you either have to alter an existing cable or make your own from spare parts. (I tried both methods using a 9-25 setup).

What you need is:

- 2 x Female serial plug (1 x 25-pin for the Amiga, 1 x 9 or 25-pin depending on your PC COM port)

- Shielded serial cable (at least 7 wires, most common is 8 wires + 1 twisted shielding)

- Soldering-iron (and a little soldering skills)

Now connect the 2 plugs in one of the following ways:

9 - 25 Serial             25 - 25 Serial

2 ======= 2         2 ======= 3
3 ======= 3         3 ======= 2
4 ======= 6         4 ======= 5
5 ======= 7         5 ======= 4
6 ======= 20       6 ======= 20
7 ======= 5         7 ======= 7
8 ======= 4       20 ======= 6

Try to solder the shielding to the metal surrounding the plug.
/!\ Do not connect other wires, this will cause undesirable effects. /!\

Now you're ready to connect the 2 computers. The next step is getting the right software.

ADF Sender Terminal

This program by Wolfgang Stoeggl (WUFFI) allows you to transfer files between your Amiga and PC,
so you can either create an ADF out of an original Amiga disk or create an Amiga disk out of an ADF file.

You can download ADF Sender Terminal here.
Further instructions on how to use the program can also be found there.

FAQ

Q: What are ADF files?
A: ADF is an abbreviation for Amiga Disk File. It is an image file of an 880K Amiga 3.5" disk,
   which is used by Amiga emulators like UAE and Fellow. The exact size is 901120 bytes (except
   copyprotected disks).

Q: While transferring an adf file you get the following error message: ADF too short?
A: This can be caused by the serial.device. Try a different version of it. Also make sure the baud rate of both the PC and Amiga are the same.

Q: The Amiga can only receive ADF files at low baudrates, at 19200 bytes are lost, the other
   direction works fine. What's wrong ?
A: Increase the Buffer Size in the serial settings of the Amiga preferences. I recommend at
   least 1024 bytes. The disks should be formatted errorfree.

Q: Data transfer takes very long.
A: That's not a question.

Q: OK, so how long should it take to transfer a disk ?
A: At 9600 baud it will take up to 17 minutes for a 880K disk, at 19200 baud it's up to 8 minutes.
(Higher speeds are not directly supported on an Amiga500.)
