2000 Maryland State Champs...Colonel Richardson High School Product Of Pride Marching Band

Colonel Richardson High School's Product of Pride Marching band welcomes the 21st century with one of the most powerful musical works of the 19th century - Dvoraks's "New World Symphony" Within a few weeks of arriving in this country in the autumn of 1892, Dvorak was at work on a new symphony of "impressions and greetings from the New World". It is true that Dvorak had, by that time, heard and enjoyed various American folk musics, including that of black Americans, but Dvorak remained what he always was, a "simple Czech musician". What seems American about the "New World" Sympony-the cakewalk rhythms, the "primitive" instrumental colors, the folkish melodies-all of these, in truth, are just as typical of the composers own native style. Whatever the ethnicity of the "New World Symphony", it is unmistakably precoccupied with the out-of-doors. The Adagio introduction, for example, established a certain pastorality with the little cakewalk, then threatens it with ominous thrusts. Ahush settles for "Going Hom". The developement treats this relationship extensively, on occasion stormily. The retransition pointedly mingles the themes of the first and second movements. Through a process of integration of the themes from the previous movements, the finale builds to a titanic climax. This passionate and moving Dan Lutz arrangement ends with one of the very difficult final bars in the literature. The Product of Pride band brings you the challenging work in the context of a complex and active visual presentation. Color integration and expertly staged instrumentation provide you with a moving picture of the musical work.
