The Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV), heir to the United Confederate Veterans (UCV), was officially organized in Richmond, Virginia in 1896 by the sons and grandsons of those patriots who honorably served the Southern Confederacy during the War Between the States, 1861-65.
The SCV, an historical, non-political, non-profit organization, was established for the sole purpose of honoring the memory of the citizen-soldiers of the Southern Confederacy, and ensuring that a true history of the War Between the States is preserved for future generations. There are today over 600 SCV Chapters (known as Camps) and 27,000 SCV members dedicated to that purpose.
"To you, Sons of Confederate
Veterans,
we submit the vindication of the cause
for
which we fought; to your strength will
be
given the defense of the Confederate
soldier's good name, the guardianship of
his
history, the emulation of his virtues,
the
perpetuation of those principles he
loved and
which made him glorius and which you
also
cherish. Remember, it is your duty to
see
that the true history of the South is
presented to future generations."
-Lt. General Stephen Dill Lee, Commander General United Confederate Veterans, New Orleans, Louisiana, 1906
