Pre War: School teacher, lawyer-legislator

Enlisted as a Colonel on May 07, 1862. Commission in Company S, 62nd Infantry Regiment Virginia on 07 May 1862.

Promoted to Full Brigadier General January 28, 1863

Imboden led the lst Virginia Partisan Rangers in the 1862 Shenandoah Campaign, and the following year he conducted a major raid into northwestern Virginia. He also commanded a cavalry brigade in the Gettysburg and 1864 Shenandoah Campaigns.

Post War: Resumed his law practice; coal mine developer; founded the town of Damascus, Virginia
