In commencing a search for new employment, I have considered my options carefully. In a perfect situation, I would wish to find a position which would encompass all my skills and experience, i.e. international, sales, marketing, research, analysis, linguistic, projects, former Soviet Union, etc. This is unlikely to happen, so I put the following variants forward for consideration, in the hope that it might "strike a chord" with a potential employer.
I am willing to consider both temporary or permanent employment, depending upon the suitability of the position and requirements of the potential employer.
Expatriate Assignment
This could be in a managerial, representative or functional role, either start-up or the take-over of an existing position. Here my past record of expatriate employment and allied language skills would be important, supported by broad industrial experience.
Export Sales & Marketing
Probably UK or Europe based, requiring regular travel to a designated area, where I would be responsible for growing the market. Here sales, marketing, linguistic and interpersonal skills would be of merit, together with the proven ability to absorb and utilise new techniques and technology.
Research, Analysis, Restructuring and Reporting
These are skills which I believe have been under-utilised to date. In particular, the experience and capabilities gained in investigating and reporting potential investments have yet to be fully exploited elsewhere. My wide business background, with a mature and objective judgement capacity, could be allied to my knowledge of computer-based analysis and reporting tools to deliver a "full package" capability to suit the particular needs of an employer.
Project Management
Here advantage would be taken of the skills and experience gained in two major capital equipment installation projects in Moscow and Kishinev, as well as in lower value projects completed in Uzbekistan. My record shows that I am a dedicated team player, results orientated, who prefers to lead by example. When the occasion merits, I am not afraid to don overalls and get my hands dirty to assist overcoming an installation or process problem. Minutes later, I could be back in "shirt and tie" negotiating the next completion and hand-over stage. I have experience of managing multicultural teams and I strongly believe that respect is earned, not demanded, in such situations.
General Management
In view of my past experience of working, at various times, in the production, design, planning, sales, marketing, accounts and personnel functions of companies, I feel that I could perform well in a general management position, preferably at a small or medium enterprise. I believe that my proven marketing bias, supported by numeracy and computer literacy advantages, would be highly suited for an employment where all-rounder, generalist skills are sought.
Although it is now many years since I completed the last of my formal classroom teaching assignments, it should be pointed out that training is becoming more and more a part of everyday business. For example, probably every one of the fifty-plus exhibitions organised on behalf of Sellers & Co included the provision of some form of on-stand training, necessitating the preparation of sales overheads and handout materials. Likewise, the preparation of investment presentations has great similarities to getting ready for training sessions. Both have messages to impart in controlled environments. For these reasons, I do not feel that I have lost the art of lesson preparation and communication.
