Audrey Weisiger Named 1999 USFSA/USOC Coach of the Year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 3, 1999) -- Audrey Weisiger of Clifton, Va., has been named 1999 Coach of the Year by the United States Figure Skating Association.

Weisiger, a member of the Washington Figure Skating Club, began coaching in 1972 and has coached numerous top-level national and international athletes including 1999 U.S. champion and World bronze medalist Michael Weiss for the past 15 years. Weisiger, an original staff member of the Fairfax Ice Arena, holds a masters rating and World Coach ranking from the Professional Skaters Association (PSA) and has served on the Board of Directors of both the USFSA and the PSA.

Weisiger, who started skating at age 8, is a former gold medalist in figures and freestyle on the regional and sectional levels and claimed bronze medals in the 1968 U.S. Novice Championships and 1969 U.S. Junior Championships.

In addition to coaching, Weisiger volunteers her time to many worthy causes including the Whitman Walker AIDS clinic and has organized Skate-a-thon's for St. Jude's Children's Hospital. A 1980 graduate of George Washington University, Weisiger resides in Clifton, Va., with her husband Henry and daughter Kelly.

Along with the other 40 National Governing Body (NGB) award recipients, Weisiger will be honored at the United States Olympic Committee's (USOC) fourth annual Coach of the Year Awards Banquet in Washington, D.C., September 18. She will also contend for 1999 USOC Coach of the Year honors, which is awarded to one of the NGB coach nominees. Frank Carroll is the only figure skating coach to receive the honor, winning in 1997.
