University of Ioannina Forensic Medicine is a specialized area of medical practice, concerned with the relationship between medicine and the law. More specifically, forensic medicine is the scientific use of medical and paramedical specialties, as well as various dental, psychological, biological, chemical, and mechanical techniques, in investigating the causes of a person's death, disability, injury, or disease. It is used in the pursuit of justice in court proceedings and in the protection of the public from environmental hazards. Applications range from child abuse to murder and death from violations of civil rights. Functions of a Medical Examiner
According to the law, it is the responsibility of the Medical Examiner to investigate all deaths from criminal violence, accident or suicide, as well as those that occurred when the person was in apparent good health, was not attended by a physician, was imprisoned, or died in any suspicious manner.
The laboratories and administrative offices of the Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology are located on the University Campus. Course lectures take place in the medical school lecture halls. The Department also operates the University Hospital clinical Forenic Medicine service.
The Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology teaches a required one semester course to medical student. In addition, the Department also offers one elective in the curriculum : Forensic Paediatric Pathology. Education is one of the most
important activities of the Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, extending through the hole spectrum of Forensic Sciences, offering a modern and complete program of theoretical and practical training, whether in undergraduate, postgraduate, or continuing education level. A doctoral degree in Forensic Pathology can be earned upon completion of an individually tailored program.
