Sam was relieved when she picked up the phone and heard Megan’s voice.
“I’m sorry I hung up and all. I was a bit overwhelmed,” Meg explained to Sam.
“It’s ok, I don’t blame you. I was shocking to us too,” Sam replied. The two best friends spent the next two hours talking about her condition, Meg’s mother, and her having to go to Florida. Sam asked Meg if there was any way she could come with her and Meg said she would love to but had to talk it over with her parents first.
After hanging up with Meg, Sam called her aunt in Florida. “Hello, is Aunt Jane there?” Sam asked to a unfamiliar male voice.
“Yes, hold on a second,” they replied.
“Hello, this is Jane,” her aunt replied.
“Hi Aunt Jane, it’s Samantha,” Sam said in an upbeat voice.
“Oh hi, haven’t heard from you since Valentine’s Day. How’s my favorite niece?” Aunt Jane replied.
“Um… not so good. Mom and I just got back from the doctors,” Sam said slowly.
“Is something wrong honey?” her aunt said with great worry.
“Well the doctor said I have cancer and I need treatment as soon as possible,” Sam explained.
“Oh, dear, that must be hard for you. When did you start treatment?” She asked.
“Well that’s the thing I called about. My doctor is referring me to a clinic in Florida to get the treatment,” Samantha said warily.
“Oh, honey, you are more than welcome to stay here for as long as you need. When does it start?” her aunt asked.
“Well I think they said the last week in June. Is that ok?” Samantha asked feeling a little bit better about the situation.
“It’s fine dear. I have taken a job about a mile from my home and I walk there everyday. So I will be home and so will Dan. You remember Dan don’t you? He’s my boyfriend. He is a set designer for musical tours,” her aunt explained.
“Yes I think I remember him. I was wondering if you have room for one more person?” Sam asked.
“Sure, does your mom want to come down too?” She asked.
“Um… no, She is too busy with work to take all that time off. I wanted my best friend Megan to come down with me. I think you met her at Christmas last year.” Sam said.
“Yes I remember her. Sure she can come down. We have an empty bedroom and the guestroom. That’s fine. And that way I won’t have to worry about leaving you by yourself.” Jane said relieved.
“Thank you so much Aunt Jane. I will call you when I get the flight schedule and stuff worked out,” Sam said.
“You are very welcome dear. This is going to help you. I know it,” her aunt replied optimistically.
After talking to her aunt she talked everything over with her Mom and Megan. They were all in agreement with the plans. Treatment started in 2 weeks and Sam needed to get herself ready for it.
