The Chapel of Art is a Center of Excellence for The Arts in Criccieth, North Wales, U.K. I met this wonderful woman from ClayArt ListServ. She was posting a plea for help with the International Potters Path. I had decided that this would be a fun and generous thing to be a part of. After responding to her plea, we have had several conversations. Janet is a person with a big heart and a big heart for art. I am working on my tile now. The art of the chapel was the beginning for her, as she saved it from ruins now it is called The Chapel of Art -- or sometimes The CoA for short -- is also home of The International Potters' Path, a millennium project sponsored by potters from around the world, including myself.

The CoA has many events throughout the year, and events at The Chapel of Art are visited by over 10,000 adults each year and include:
Art Exhibitions
Concerts
Classes & Workshops
Poetry & Literature
Lectures - Talks - Discussions
Criccieth Festival
Charity work

International seems to be a large focus with Janet. The CoA's web page can be read in:

Janet needs 5000 ceramic tiles for her project, and she would like each tile in The Path to represent over one million people living on the planet, Earth!

If you are a clay artist, potter, tile-maker or ceramist Janet and I would like for you to take part in this project. If you are a painter, sculptor, or any other form of artist then why not find a potter living near you to commission a tile from you? Work with them on the design you would like and see how easy it is to commissionwork become a patron of The Ceramic Arts.

To become a "one-in-a-million Path Maker" and part of this unique project, please make (or commission) a tile and send it to The CoA as soon as possible! You and your work will then become a part of The Path and a part of history, visible to all visitors walking The Path for generations to come!

Wherever you live, or where ever you are from, your participation in The Path may even bring you some work and recognition… Visitors to The CoA come from all over the World and may live near you. This is very true because Janet has already had someone from one state away from me interested in having me commission a tile for them.

Why build The Path?

Firstly, the entrance must be made safer and more accessible, especially for wheelchairs, and people with difficulty walking.
Secondly, a love of ceramics has resulted in The CoAexhibiting high quality, contemporary ceramics. With so much quality clay inside, it was the obvious choice for outside!
As Janet and Eckhard are internationalists themselves, they want The CoA to be a place of regional, national and international artistic merit and exchange.
If you would like to commission a tile for The Path, please take all the technical information below to your chosen potter. You do not know a potter in your area, then e-mail us: we may be able to put you in contact with a potter who lives near you. Or you may E-mail me
The great variety of techniques, styles and designs is really inspiring and The Path will certainly be interesting to view, especially those tiles where names, emblems and symbols of countries are included. That is the paradox: the more overtly regional the tiles are, the greater the international character of The Path will appear! Each new arrival is displayed in the
The CoA separately, with the maker's name & country of origin and any other information sent. This creates great public interest in The Path -- even before it can be walked along!

Your Tile…

should represent what is unique about you, your work and your country, its people, environment, culture and heritage -- not CoA's please! What is special about your part of the World to add to this international jig-saw? Whatever you design, please incorporate your personal seal and your town or country of origin (name, map, flag or symbol?) Remember 10,000+ people will tread The Path each year looking for tiles from every continent and country in the World including yours!

Important!

Your tile must be square, impervious, sturdy and tough with non-slip surface so it is safe to walk in very wet weather no very deep profile please

Tiles to measure:

10cm x 10 cm (4" x 4") x 1 cm (give or take a mm or 2!)
See more information about packaging, and needs see the CoA's web page.

The CoA does not receive any public funding or grant aid (and never have), neither is this project being sponsored in any way. That is why they depend on your generosity. Please support them if you can and pass this information on to all the other potters you know at home and abroad. If you know of ceramic associations, college departments and so on, please inform them about The Path as I have. They also need the addresses of specialist magazines and publications around the world. As you can imagine, they need all the help you can give to make this unique project work.
