8 to win boys team title. Megan Little – Wins girls race as top three runners go off

Pat Bailey and Megan Little of C. Milton Wright were the individual winners at the
12th annual Knights Invite Monday at Baybrook Park.
Bailey, a junior, who was Class 4A State runner-up last year, traversed the three
mile course in Brooklyn in 15 minutes and 31 seconds; second fastest time in meet history.
Bailey and Chris Wright of Mt. St. Joe battled neck and neck (splits 5:02 and 10:09)
for two miles before the former pulled away on the hills. Bailey’s time was five seconds
slower than Spalding’s Dusty Lieb posted last year.
Jesse Slowikowski finished third as C. Milton Wright (1,3,5,7,8) dominated the team
competition with 24 points. Mt. St. Joe edged Westminster for second (71-74).
Annapolis standout Rachel Dalby led the girls race for 1 ˝ before she and a pair of
St. Mary’s runners failed to follow the proper painted course (Dalby has run the course
three times before).
That enabled Little to take the lead and she maintained it until the end, winning
with a time of 20:33. Her victory was not enough to carry C. Milton Wright, last year’s
Knights Invite and two-time defending 4A state champion.
Megan Schollenberger finished second to lead Notre Dame Prep’s pack runners (2,4,5,6,8)
to the girls team title with 25 points.
Next year’s Knights Invite is scheduled for Friday, September 13, 2002. There will
be an open race (for the first time ever) on Saturday, September 14.
