Cross Country Challenge Begins
Davis proves Summer Track pays off - Green looking for a fourth City Title, and a top State Meet finish - Chesapeake wins a tight team battle in men's - North County & Northern combined win Women's
The Metro Harriers kicked off their sixth annual Cross Country Challenge with the Baybrook Park Open. Cloudy skies with a 75 degree temperature, with 90% humidity and a muddy course(heavy rains the night before) greeted the runners. Chesapeake sophomore Brandon Davis(sixth in the 1500- 4:26 and 3000- 9:48 at the recent Track and Field Championships) showed that summer conditioning with the New Carrolton Track Club(based at North County) pays off. Brandon took the lead at the mile mark and won, going away in 17:27. Second place went to Jim Cramer of D.C. in 17:35. Highly touted Calvert Hall senior Fran Glover was third in 17:44. Former Catonsville Community College XC All-American was fourth in 17:50. Calvert Hall senior Bryan Nasuta placed fifth in 17:53. North County Cross Country coach Ed Harte led the Masters, placing twelfth in 20:13. Metro Harriers teammate Jim Knost was the second Masters finisher, placing 25th overall in 21:50. Four teams entered the team competition. The combined team of the Metro Harriers and North County had four runners finish before Chesapeakes third runner. Chesapeake's pack finish of guys 13, 14, and 15(runners 3, 4, and 5) proved vital because the combined team's fifth runner placed 20th. Chesapeake's "A"-team(52 points) edged the North County-Metro Harriers by 1 point(53 points). CalvertHall was third with 86 points and Chesapeake's "B"-team was fourth with 123 points. Northern High School's Debbie Greean(three-time City Champion and 11th in 4A State Meet last year) had splits of 6:30 and 13:45 enroute to a first place finish in an impressive 20:57. Green had previously stated that the Baybrook Park course is tougher than the Hereford course because of the succession of hils after mile one. Many others who have run both courses agree. Baybrook Park was ranked as one of the five best Cross Country courses in a poll The Sun completed last year. Green will attempt to become the first girl to win four City titles in a row and is a major contender for the 4A State Championships. Chesapeakes Lynn Blubaugh(just missed qualifying for the State Meet last year at the Regionals on the same course) was a strong second in 23:05. North County sophomore April Penn(fresh off XC Camp at Shippensburg) placed third in 23:21. Chesapeake sophomores Nichole Bernaix(24:05) and Linda Johnson(24:17) were fourth and fifth. The combined team of Northern and North County defeated Chesapeake 186 to 194(quick score method utilized)
