In early 2001, while in route to a business meeting in the northeast corner of Ohio, I noticed in the median far off in the distance something that resembled a sign. As I got closer I realized that this was not a sign but a handmade cross made of wood with flowers on it. This particular cross looked to be made from old scrap pieces of wood that had been painted with white house paint. Across the top of the cross was the name of a person enscribed in black marker. There was nothing really elaborate about this cross but it definitely caught my eye. I had seen items such as this on other road trips before but I had never really paid much attention to their detail or meaning. For some strange reason that day was a little different. As I drove past the cross I began to focus on the significance of it and what it represented. It was then that I realized that someone had lost their life at that very spot and that somewhere somebody has suffered a significant loss. My heart went out to the families and friends of this person(s) despite not even knowing them. I came to realize that the cross could have been constructed and placed on the roadway in an attempt to honor a dearly missed loved one or maybe this was just an attempt to bring closure to such a tragic situation. I guess I will never know exactly what the intent but whatever it was, it has a significant meaning to someone somewhere. I then began to understand the importance of this cross and how it could serve as not only a memorial but also as a reminder for others to drive safetly.
From that point on I began to notice more and more crosses popping up all over. It didn't matter where I was memorials were being placed on the interstates, rural roads, and even the inner city. I realized then that the demand for memorials was growing but I was disappointed with the lack of personalization and overall appearance of some of these memorials. I felt as if a loss of life should be honored with something a little more personal. Thus, I created Mile Marker Memorials.
