David and Sarah Jane Brewster's Descendants

Note: I lost half this page and have rebuilt it. Hope I managed to get everything. Still a couple of items from emails that I have to add in. If you find something missing or in error please let me know so I can correct it. Thanks. 30 April 2006.

I am also adding PANB after dates to designate information found in the databases at the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick. It may be new information or it may confirm information that I already had. 30 May 2006.

Jemima Jane Brewster was born 23 December 1866 in Glassville, NB, and died in Carleton Co., NB 8 June 1938 (PANB). She married William Walter Murphy on 10 May 1894 in Maine. 1900 US Census shows William born September 1869 in Canada. They had 2 sons.

Jemima Jane and her family in the 1900 US Census - Lines 53 - 55

Haven't been able to locate this family in 1910 USA or 1911 Canada Censuses.

There is a record of a second marriage to Guy N. Jones in Carleton Co., on 23 July 1918 (PANB). Records in Glassville Anglican Cemetery show Plot #052 Jones, Guy N. (1879-1957) and #053 Jones, Jemima, w/o G.N. (1867-1938).

Margaret (Maggie) Brewster was born about 1868. Family notes indicated she married a man named Edwards, had a daughter named Florence who married a man named Cummings. I have found a possibility in the Maine State Archives Marriage List of a Maggie Brewster married to an Alfred Edwards of Lewiston, Maine on 24 May 1897 in Maine. I have not been able to learn anything more about her.

Robert John Brewster was born 27 March 1871 and died in Carleton Co., NB 4 February 1949 (PANB). His first wife was Laura E. Doody, whom he married on 16 March 1895 in Maine. Laura died at age 22, 25 June 1899, in Centerville, Carleton Co., NB (PANB) of a ruptured appendix. They had a family of four.

Robert John Brewster married a second time to Florence May Doherty or Dougherty on 21 August 1900 in Carleton Co., NB (PANB) and they had a large family. I did locate this burial information in the Windsor Cemetery, Parish of Brighton (bordering Aberdeen) Plot #073 Brewster, Robert J. (1872-1949); Brewster, Florence M., w/o Robert J. (1880-1955); Brewster Ernest A. (1911-1930) s/o Robert & Florence. Mary Anne Brewster was born 31 July 1873 in Glassville, NB. She married Banford Dan Ward Niles (Ban) on 22 September 1892 in Houlton, Maine. They had five children. Mary Anne died on 29 June 1927 (PANB) and Ban died on 28 September 1944, both in Woodstock, NB. Their eldest daughter Bertha corresponded with my father in 1968 regarding family history and some of the information is recorded below.

George Abraham Brewster was born 2 September 1875 (according to Draft Registration Card) and died in the late 1950's. He married Mary Joseph (Minnie) Dowling.

George married second Isabella Mann between 1910 an 1917. Eliza Brewster (Liza) born in 1879. She married John Black on 22 Oct 1989 in Carleton Co., NB (PANB). John was born 26 October 1872 and died in 1938. Eliza died 12 January 1901 at age 20 in Carleton Co., NB (PANB). Both are buried in the United Church Cemetery in Glassville, Plot #129. There was an indication of an adopted child James (Boyle) Black but the 1901 Canadian Census shows John Black as a widower living alone. It is not known where the name Boyle is introduced unless it has something to do with Isabella Montgomery Boyle. PANB has record of a second marriage to Josephine Doherty 30 July 1902 and records of further family which is supported by the 1911 Canadian Census.

David Henry Brewster was born on 14 August 1882 in Glassville, Carleton Co., NB (PANB). He died on 31 January 1953 in Winnipeg, MB. He married Edith Esther Bower (Edie) on 10 September 1906 in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Edith was born on 20 April 1884 in Upper Ohio, NS, Canada and died 31 August 1952 in Winnipeg. Both are buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Winnipeg, MB. David lived for a number of years in Boston, where he worked on the Boston Street Railway before returning to Canada with his wife and three eldest children. This family shows up in the 1910 US Census at No. 8 Newhall Street, Suffolk Co., Boston City, Ward 24, Prec. 2, Page 4. where his occupation is as a Machinist and in the 1911 Canadian Census back in Glassville, NB. living with his father. David and his family shortly moved on to the Province of Manitoba where David began employment with the Railway.

Fred's U.S. WWII Draft Registration Card

Fred and his family in the 1930 US Census - lines 34 - 37

Note: Birth record from PANB and Draft Registration give birth year as 1887, 1901 Canadian census gives birth year as 1886. This poses a question as to date of younger brother William's birth as the only record I can find is 1901 census with birth date of 21 Dec 1887 which would only be 4 months after Fred's birth. Both Fred and William are listed as age 3 in the 1891 Census, but as 14 and 13 respectively in 1901. There is no record of William's birth at PANB.

William Brewster "Willie" was born on 27 Dec 1887 (according to 1901 Canadian Census) in West Glassville, Carleton Co., NB. His death records at the PANB lists his death as 26 October 1913 in Boston, Massachusetts. He worked for a time in Boston with his older brother David Henry on the Boston Street Railway. I can't find any record in 1910 US or 1911 Canadian Census. Willie's birth date is also in question regarding his two death records, one shows age 24 and one shows age 25.
