The Joy of Senior Boxers

ONE BY ONE ...

One by One, they pass by my cage, Too old, too worn, too broken, no way. Way past his time, he can't run and play. Then they shake their heads slowly and go on their way.

A little old man, arthritic and sore, It seems I am not wanted anymore. I once had a home, I once had a bed, A place that was warm, and where I was fed. Now my muzzle is grey, and my eyes slowly fail. Who wants a dog so old and so frail?

My family decided I didn't belong, I got in their way, my attitude was wrong. Whatever excuse they made in their head, Can't justify how they left me for dead. Now I sit in this cage, where day after day, The younger dogs get adopted away.

When I had almost come to the end of my rope, You saw my face, and I finally had hope. You saw through the grey, and the legs bent with age, And felt I still had life beyond this cage. You took me home, gave me food and a bed, And shared your own pillow with my poor tired head.

We snuggle and play, and you talk to me low, You love me so dearly, you want me to know. I may have lived most of my life with another, But you outshine them with a love so much stronger. And I promise to return all the love I can give, To you, my dear person, as long as I live.

I may be with you for a week, or for years, We will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears.

And when the time comes that God deems I must leave, I know you will cry and your heart, it will grieve. And when I arrive at the Bridge, all brand new, My thoughts and my heart will still be with you. And I will brag to all who will hear, Of the person who made my last days so dear.

Greta

This is Greta. She was taken out of a shelter where cold and heartless people left her to die.

She is now in rescue and has begun her new life. Through rescue Greta will learn that love can and should be unconditional, that owners who truly love her will never leave her to die, alone and cold and afraid. She will learn that there is a second chance for older dogs.

Gretas forever family will learn that older dogs make GREAT family additions. Not only are they housebroke and past the chewing stage, they are very grateful. For they know what is it like to be unwanted and unloved and they do their best to please their new family. These older dogs appreciate being rescued and they bond very quickly to their new family, as if they know that these people are here to stay.

Macy

The phone call came from the animal shelter. "We have another senior girl for you" the voice said. I asked how long she had. I was told two days before they would run out of room and have to put her to sleep.

Two days later the volunteer who so kindly offered to help get Macy to safety pulled up with her in tow. She was obviously old, but also appeared to have had some sort of injury to her jaw. Her face seemed crooked. It does not stop her from being all the things any other boxer is; fun, lively, active and playful.

Macy is a joy to be around and seems to love all people in spite of her current situation. Macys story is not over yet. She will have a long road to recovery, to be an adoptable dog, but the rescue people who are now caring for her will wait as long as it takes. Someday a family will drive up to Macys foster home and meet her, they will fall in love with this gentle old lady and take her home forever.

Ginger

This is Ginger. She is the beloved famiy pet of one of our members. She is a very senior boxer. Ginger turned 13 years old in December 2002. This old gal is still very playful and very much an active part of the family.

Senior boxers have so much to offer. Could you open your heart and home to one?
