Day Five

Martyn, Marvin and Craig, made an early start today. Martyn finished building the wall around the pond. he set the coping on a bed of mortar on the wall blocks, and on a 'Gripfill' base on the pond lip. He has started the walling for the terrace paving, and has laid the bulk of the paving, which looks very nice. All their early hard work is now showing results, as things take shape.

Day Five

Martyn had given some thought to the proposed wall alongside the summer house, and has decided to continue the line of the terrace walling, and cut paving to meet the original paved base of the summer house. He said this will bridge the gap where the original line, steps in, and give the added advantage of a shelf, upon which pot plants can be stood - what a great idea.

Day Five

Another couple of problems arose, one being the level base I laid for the summer house. Although I put in a fall for rainwater run-off, the direction is accross the garden, away from the doors, and Martyn's fall is required to be down the length of the garden. Although Martyn said he will be able to work around this, I cannot, at this stage see how he can overcome the difference between the horizontal line of the old paving, and the necessary angle of the new, without some pretty obvious transition.

Day Five

The other is a wedge shaped area, caused by Martyn having to turn the last fence panel, to avoid the roots of the holly tree. Martyn said he will cut segments of paving to overcome this. Again, I feel we are going to have to expect to see a fairly large infill of mortar, to correct this problem.

Day Six

Having given the summer house paving problem some thought overnight, I discussed the matter with Martyn, and we agreed to lay a buff rounded edging along the front of the summer house paving, giving enough height to allow Martyn to lay in the drop, without having to come down to the old paving level. This does of course create a curb on the summer house side of the paving, but we can live with that. If you expand this picture, and the one below, you can see what a neat job Martyn has made

Day Six

Martyn laid a nicely contoured wall along the border, and paved around the apron of the summer house. This looks really nice. If you want to see what he had to contend with, see the picture on the next page. I will now have to relay my edging between the conifer and the summer house, to cope with the slightly higher soil level.

I'm getting fed up!
