Photographic record of our garden project

IN THE BEGINNING.....

Old Garden/Pond - See the horror pics on page 2

It all started when we decided to replace our existing small pond, with something bigger. We thought we would completely redesign the garden while we were at it, so to speak, and decided to pave the whole area, with the pond as the main focal point. This would cut down on the maintenance of the garden, and with the help of containers, and wall/fence planters, we will still have a lot of colour in the garden. We will keep a border at the end of the garden for climbers etc.

Pond

We decided to go for something more formal, than our original pond, and more in keeping with a paved garden. We visited Shirley Aquatics, and a number of other 'fishy' places, before deciding upon a 8ft x 5ft fibreglass pre-formed Blagdon 'Windermere' pond from Avon Aquatics near Stratford-upon-Avon. (quite a pretentious name for a bit of plastic). They have quite an extensive range of ponds, but we felt this one, was more in line with our requirements.

Wall Feature

The Wall Fountain we found in Leamington Spa, in a shop called Moseleys. It was reduced in price, and was quite a bargain. I quite like this store, and we have since bought from there, a large wooden framed Parasol, and a heavy figured cast iron base. I am wittering away at Margaret now, for a teak table to match - watch this space!

Fountain

After an extensive search for something we liked, we purchased the 'Three Graces' fountain, from Neil's Crafts at Hatton Country World. It needed a bit of re-jigging to fit the plumbing and fountain jets, as it was only intended as a bird bath, but I am quite happy with the result. We found the ideal base for the fountain at Beaty's Garden Centre, this raised the statue to the correct height in the water, and houses the water pump. Me and Simon put our wellies on, and Simon lifted the fountain into the pond - what a guy!

1.3/4"Ice February 2001.

Brrrrr!!

I couldn't believe how the ice built up on the pond. At the thickest point it measured 1.3/4". The pond heater was submerged by the weight of the ice, and was rendered useless. Throughout this, the pump and fountain, continued to operate, although I had to knock the ice off the fountain, each morning. Baptism of fire (ice) or what! At this stage the pond walls and coping are only a 'Dry Fit', as having cut the blocks to size, I thought I may as well stack them around the pond, rather than in a heap in the garden.
