Police
and other emergency personnel communicate using a standard code
called '10-codes'. (From the number '10', which precedes
many of these calls.)
You will find your
Police Scanner much more interesting if you can understand the
communication between the dispatcher and the units responding
to a call. This list will clarify many commonly used terms used
by emergency personnel.
Scanner frequencies
are specific to your region and you will need to obtain the
list of local frequencies from your Police or Fire Dept. You
can also ask a store that sells scanners, such as 'Radio Shack'
for a local frequency list.
