SUBLIME3

I have gotten allot done in the last little while. I have been building the robot in "fast mode" since I didn't know when I had to finish by. Well now that Battle Bots has anownced the date for the next event I can slow building down a little. I still plan on finishing by the end of March however so I can get almost two full months of practice driving in.

I finished up the last report by completing one side of the drive. Her it is with the other side done. Now I had a few decisions to make, should I A.-build a steel frame from tubing and mount all the aurmor to that? Or should I B.- build alluminum bulkheads and mount all the armor to that? I chose B. I used the plasma cutter to cut out two identical bulkheads from 1/4" 2024 alluminum, then I scribed a patern to cut out to make it lighter.

I then clamped the bulkhead in the mill and started to cut the pattern out. Here I am finishing it.

After I took the part from the mill I cleaned up the rounded edges, I did them free hand so they had a lot of litle ridges on them, the file made them nice and smooth. Here is the completed bulkhead. I then did the same thing to the other one.

Now that I had both bulkheads done I started to cut out the other armor. Here I am cutting out the back. It takes almost 2 seconds to cut through the 1/4" 2024 panel with this hydralic shear. Here I laid out the side and back armor panels to test fit them.

I cut the reast of the armor panels out on the hydralic shear, took about 5 min to do all of the panels. Hear I have started to lay them out in their final places. I used tape to holt them in place to take the pictures. Hear are a few shots of what it will look like.

Here are a few more.

Here is one more. The next step for me is to take the drive train off of the base and then TIG weld the armor and frame together, it will be 1 solid peice. Right now the frame, armor, motors, tires, and chain drives weight in at 40 pounds, I will have to make this lighter to squeeze in 6 pounds of nicads, 12 pounds of actuators, and the arms unknown weight. Here I am putting my arm in where the robots arm will go. It will be a "clamp bot" as Comedy central calls them, with a grabber and a lifter combined. On another note, I might rename the robot Flincher (Flipper+Pincher) but I don't know if I want to. If you have an opinion whether I should keep the name Sublime, or rename to Flincher drop me a line.
