Set in rural New Hampshire, River Red is a grim but powerful story centering on cycles of abuse and guilt. After years of watching his alcoholic father abuse his younger brother, Tom's character, Dave Holden, quietly slips into his father's bedroom and murders the sleeping man. Realizing that his brother has committed this heinous crime to protect him, Dave's younger brother decides to put on the bloody clothes and take the rap for the murder. He is a juvenile and will receive a much easier sentence. Dave is forced to try to pick up the pieces at home while his brother is sent to a juvenile detention center to await his twenty-first birthday. Racked with guilt and struggling to pay off his father's debts, Dave begins drinking heavily and takes to robbing gas stations and convenience stores. Tom's friend, Eric Drilling, originally wrote this story as a one-act play, which Tom directed. Realizing that the story had potential, Tom and several friends decided to produce the film version of it. The movie premiered at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival and was very well received. One reviewer described the film as dealing "eloquently with the ties that bind brothers as well as self-destruction and the cycle of abuse. Not an easy film to watch but one that's certainly worth the trouble." The movie contained several interesting cameos. Cracker frontman, David Lowery played Billy, a bartender who is sympathetic to Dave's situation and offers him work. Tom's good friend, Steven Zahn, and Tom's wife, Jenni Gallagher, also appeard in the film.
