What is UNIX? Unix is a popular operating system which was built in the late 1960's
by AT&T Bell Laboratories. UNIX operating systems can run on nearly any computer
that has been developed since 1975. Unlike DOS, it supports multi-tasking and
multi-user. This is one of the reason why UNIX was so widely and popularly used.
Some companies have modified and changed it for their own use therefore there are
many versions of Unix. For example, SunOS, Xenix, BSD and System V etc.
What is LINUX?
It looks like and does like UNIX, but it does not come from the same source
code base. It was developed by Linus B. Torvalds and other contributors.
It's a freeware which users can distribute this software freely as long as
user does not change the source. As of version 1.0, Linux became no longer beta
version. However, it is still developing by people all around world. Since it is
programmed by the lagunage 'C', it is easy to modify and bug fix. Now supports
GUI (Graphic User Interface).
Both of the OS run so well on most of the hardware platforms such as Intel and
Motorola microprocessors, so these OS are very popular and used widely.
What is the difference? Features
both supports these followings:
-true multitasking
-virtual memory
-shared libraries
-demand
-loading, shared, copy-on-write executables, proper memory management,
and TCP/IP networking and more! :-)
