* Some of the most memorable scenes in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" were actually ad-libbed my Matthew himself including the one with the clarinet and the line "Never had one lesson".


* Has an uncredited cameo at the end of the 1988 film She's Having a Baby.



* Was the original choice to play Alex P. Keaton on the TV series Family Ties, but declined because he did not want to leave New York, where his father was dying of cancer. Michael J. Fox was cast in his place.



* Matthew's father was also a great actor. He was best known as the father in the television series Family. You can also see a great performance of his in Dog Day Afternoon with Al Pacino.



* Matthew's first professional stage appearance was opposite his father in On Valentine's Day.



* At the age of 21, Matthew won his first Tony Award for best actor in a featured role playing Eugene Morris Jerome in Brighton Beach Memoirs.
