Welcome to a page dedicated to pan-flutes.

Panflutes have been with us for a very long time. The instrument is found among many cultures throughout the world. In Chile is known as the "laca" and in Romania as the "nai". Among the Aymaras it is known as "siku" . Made from bamboo, this instrument creates a haunting sound when blown across. The pan flute on this picture is a "siku".

The Romanian "nai" was made popular by Fanica Luca at the World Fair in Paris, France in 1937. Mr. Luca went on to play several concerts around the world and would eventually teach the panflute in 1949. From these teachings emerged great panflute players such as: Gheorghe Zamfir, Damian Luca, Simion Stanciu and many others. In South America groups such as " Los Calchakis" and " Los Incas" were incorporating the native instruments of the Andes Mountains into their music. Among these instrumens was the "siku". By the late 50's several recordings were available to the general public.
