#16(and a half) - Jerimoth Hill, RI

A statue coup near the top of Rhode Island.

On the way back to New York from Mt. Washington, we stopped at Jerimoth Hill, the highest point in Rhode Island. The guidebook said there's not much to it, just a walk of about 100 yards or so from the road. Since the book had been published, there was a change of ownership in the property between the road and the highpoint. The new owner is an angry old S.O.B. who literally ran out of his house to yell at us the second we stepped on his driveway. We were very polite and tried talking to him, but he just kept screaming "Get out of here! We don't want you here!" We drove around the area looking for another trail and even talking to a few neighbors about an alternate route to the highpoint. Everyone else was very friendly, but didn't know of an alternate trail. As a result of the situation with the landowner, the Highpointers Club says that getting to the sign pictured above is close enough for them. It's not close enough for me, however, and I intend to go back and reach the true highpoint.
