Mellow Blue. A foreward by William.

Mellow Blue. A strange culmination of folk and wit. An operation that has been evolving for at least 5 years. Bruce and I went to the same college. We were both in the symphonic choir, and loved music. Bruce was a bashful but large fellow, not yet out of his shell. I asked him, "Hey, do you want to sing in a band.", or something silly like that. He was confused, being a freshman in college and used to high school hijinx. He initially thought that I was trying to play a trick, or rope him into looking like a fool. He gave in. The rest is history. We started singing together, and I started teaching him how to harmonize. In a years time, we were busking on Muskingum College's campus. We would play for girls in tight bikinis who sat in the sun. It was a nice time. An awakening. We began to play gigs at "The Old Library Coffee House". A small place that accomodated 30 people at maximum. Really crowded, but enjoyable. We began something called, "The Maddass Choir Enthusiests". Maddass eventually became what we are now, "Mellow Blue."

We added people to the group. We went through an overabundance of drummers, and guitar players. We went through fat, skinny, loud, annoying, and bothersome people. We were searching for a sound. We were irritated with the top ten attitude. We have tried to conform. We have rebelled. We finally settled where we are now. Four guys. Very simple. You can come to our shows with the knowledge that your eardrums will survive, and we will never sing a song that involves distortion or obscure nihlist lyrics that make you want to wear black. We are fun loving, and easy to listen to. More than that, we like crowd participation and conversations after our sets.

THE MUSIC:
The music is very basic in structure. Chords. Drop in a beautiful violin line. Kick the bass for some tempo. Add accordian for continuity. Then liberally apply four or two part vocal harmony. It works. It's very singable, touchable music. I don't get into any lyric explaination unless someone asks, or a story of interest is attached. We are always evolving. The last setlist will be different from the next setlist. A change or two can always be expected. Please listen carefully.

I hope this is a sufficient explaination for the masses!

Dan Warren

I met Will in early 1996. We were on the same college campus. I thought him a cocky bastard. But that was just his confidence. Various versions of the band were formed. Bruce was the first victim. He was my roomate at the time. I rarely missed a show. Their shows in early '96 and '97 were definitely entertaining. They sounded unlike anything I had heard before. I had formerly dogged Bruce and Will, but that was due to jealousy. I wanted to be a part of their creation. I never saw myself fit to be a part of the band. So, still holding onto the dream of joining the band, years passed without incident. I was lucky to get a call from Will one night.

When I reflect on Mellow Blue and simultaniously realize that I am now a part of it, the word that comes to mind is, "WOW!" My oddysey in Mellow Blue began one fateful night in June of '99 when I received a call from Will inviting me to bring my trumpet over in attempts to help him rediscover his love for writing and performing music (basic musician slump). To this day, I am simply awestruck by the musical magic that happens when the four of us get together. Our tight vocal harmonies, coupled with our ever-expanding instrumental prowess has produced a quality act with serious staying power. It's a privledge to be one small part of the music that is Mellow Blue. I guess it pays to never lose sight of a dream, eh?

Bruce is getting married soon (congrats!). Hopefully sometime afterwards, this on-again, off-again member will be able to tell us how he feels about the band.

Jeremy Dolin

Jeremy is the shy, quiet type. He hasn't had much to say about anything, much less the band.
