A lavish concert that promises all the fun, passion and fantasy of Bollywood movies hits the stage in Hong Kong this week, hoping to cash in on the growing popularity of the Indian film genre.
The southern Chinese enclave with an immigrant south Asian population of about 700,000 will be a testing ground for what organisers expect will become an international Bollywood franchise.
"Music has no language and Indian music has been going around the world. And of late, our directors and actors have opened up people's eyes and they have started looking at Bollywood as a contender for Hollywood films," said Ashok Mahtani, director of the concert promoter Atlas 3D Entertainment.
Bollywood's profile is on a seemingly inexorable rise.
With stars like the beautiful Aishwarya Rai being lured to Hollywood, the hit movie Bride and Prejudice bringing in non-India audiences worldwide and top producer Rakesh Roshan eyeing Hong Kong as a possible backdrop for the sequel to his action hit Koi Mil Gaya , the genre is definitely going global.
"Hollywood has started to respect the capability and the talent of the Indian actors. It's not easy for the Indian actors to make such inroads," Mahtani said.
The "Temptation 2004" concert tour, which has so far played in North America and Europe, is the latest step in the internationalisation of Bollywood.
Featuring the sumptuous costumes, extravagant sets and epic dance sequences, for which the genre is famous, it stars some of the biggest names of Indian film.
Superstar Shah Rukh Khan, whose presence guarantees box-office hits at home, leads a group of top Bollywood movie stars, who bring the fantasy and glamour of Bollywood to the former British colony.
The concert, initiated and produced by Shah Rukh Khan himself, will feature songs from his well-known films, including smash hits Devdas , Mohabbatein , Main Hoon Na , Chalte Chalte and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge .
"It will be full of songs and dance, creating the magic you see on films," said Mahtani.
"It will bring back what the people are missing - film music. It will create what you've seen on the big screen, creating life on stage." SRK is joined by some of India's hottest stars in the three-and-a-half hour spectacular, such as Preity Zinta, Saif Ali Khan, heart-throb Zayed Khan, supermodel-turned-actress Malaika Arora-Khan and former Miss India Celina Jaitly.
"Khan is like Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks in one. He's done all kinds of films. He's played negative roles, he's played a lover boy, a loveable son and a tragic man, who gives up his life for his lover... you cannot help but
to love him," Mahtani said.
Mahtani said he hopes the concert will bring together the Indian community and help others to understand more of India's rich culture.
"Shah Rukh Khan is travelling around and trying to get people to understand more of the Indian culture. He's passionate about spreading Bollywood across the globe," he said.
