Report:
History has recorded very exciting cricket games but very few
are at the level of the game HPCC and PACC played this past Sunday. This is the
kind of game to be remembered for many years to come. HPCC’s proud member
Fawad Khan lifted the moral of his team with his impeccable performance. The
HPCC team is grateful and proud to have such a member, who fought until the very
last delivery and gave us the gift of a memorable victory.
It was a very hot and muggy day at the HCG, both teams were on time. Dave Kumar
was there to Officiate the game. PACC won the toss and predictably decided to
bat first. PACC’s team irradiated energy and all its members were in the mood
to beat HPCC and almost got away with the prize, sadly for them, HPCC’s Fawad
spoiled their dream.
PACC started their inning with the opening pair, Waseem and Aqeel. They were on
a mission to crack HPCC’s furious pace attack. Manzoor and Fadi started their
spell with great speed and accuracy. Mark took a brilliant catch on the bowling
of Fadi and Aqeel went to the pavilion after scoring only 7 runs. Bilal joined
Waseem and tried to build a partnership but fell short when he tried to loft
Manzoor and gave an “easy” catch to Ghias (Thank God he did not drop it!).
Next to bat was Jansheer. Jansheer joined Waseem and they began scoring runs
without any pressure. Waseem got trapped on a slow and awkward delivery by Ghias
and gave an easy catch to Shami (who did not drop it, either) By the 72nd run
there were three wickets down. HPCC’s luck was high when the new batsman
Murtaza got ran out by Qaiser Bhia who, while trying to stop the ball on his
delivery, the ball went straight to the wickets at the non-striker end. Needless
to say Murtaza did not make it to his crease on time. HPCC was on a roll! They
took four wickets and the score showed only 74 runs!
Nasir, PACC’s most dangerous man was still to bat. As soon as Nasir came to
bat, he showed no mercy. His shots were majestic. HPCC ought to get Nasir out if
they were to win this game. It was then when Ghias’ second spell came into
play right with his third delivery and Nasir ended up being bowled out. Still
the damage was done. Nasir, during his short stay at the crease scored
forty-seven runs.
At the opposite end, lady luck smiled to Jansheer. HPCC had the chance to get
him out but two catches were dropped and when Ghias finally bowled him out, he
had already scored fifty-five runs. At the end of their inning PACC had totaled
two hundred and thirteen runs, a very respectable number to chase.
HPCC members love to be challenged. They took the quest to win the game and the
valuable six points. Still it was not easy. PACC put up a good fight and their
defense sure made HPCC’s journey to victory an exciting challenge. After a
short break, HPCC send Qaiser Bhia and Manzoor to the battle. Qaiser had barely
scored three runs when Kamran bowled him out. The scoreboard read sixteen.
Mushtaq was next to bat. After the very first delivery, Mushtaq was dismissed
scoreless when he got caught behind. Things were not looking too bright for HPCC,
the run rate was high but the team was confident they would rise to the
occasion. Shami’s luck was not different from that of his predecessors. He
only could score ten runs since Kamran’s brilliant performance helped PACC
bowled Shami out. Akbar joined Manzoor and tried to build a partnership. They
worked hard to keep the run rate achievable. The climatic conditions of the game
were very difficult; the heat index was almost unbearable.
Players endured the heat but their performance was definitely affected by it. As
the overs progressed, the ability of the players was diminished considerably. It
was more than apparent as the HPCC wickets continued to fall. The batsmen that
follow, (Bilal, Faisal, Ghias and Malik) struggle to stay to help maintain the
run rate but the game was growing in difficulty. PACC seem to be winning the
game, their domain of the HPCC’s inning was admirable.
At the fall of the second to last wicket HPCC seemed to have lost the game. In
the last over HPCC needed eleven runs to win. On the crease, Fadi and Mark, did
not loose hope.
In first ball delivered to Fadi, he made one run. Mark took the next single and
made possible for Fadi to return to the striker’s end. The third ball, proved
to be a real challenge for Fadi, he could not lift it high enough and he only
scored two runs. The very next delivery Fadi continued his effort to hit the
ball off the boundary. But he saw his effort frustrated by Maqbool. At this
point HPCC needed to score seven more runs within two deliveries in order to win
the game. And in a shot that seemed to be sent from above Fadi scored a glorious
six! The once somber HPCC team returned to life in jubilation. The very last
ball Fadi stamped the seal of Victory with a single.
Fadi made his HPCC fellows very proud! Way to go Fadi!
The HPCC team would like to extend its thanks to Dave Kumar and Naeem Bhai for
umpiring our game in such extreme weather! It shows your dedication to the
league. We salute your professionalism.
