"Grandma, who was my grandfather?" she asked.
Her grandmother looked at her in horror, as if she had just said the meanest thing in the world to her. "Don't you ever, ever, ask me that again," said her grandmother in a voice that scared the living daylights out of her.
"Why does she always avoid the question?" asked Elizabeth to her only friend in the world, her pet owl, Diane.
Her father was her grandmother's only son, who was mysteriously killed sometime ago. Her mother had been a Muggle who sadly died giving birth to Elizabeth. She wanted to know who her grandfather had been, whether he was still alive, anything. All she knows of her grandfather is that he and her grandmother went to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizarding. She also has a birthmark on her shoulder that her grandmother once said was exactly like one her grandfather had had. She looked at it closely, trying to make out what it looked like.
"If I didn't know any better Diane," she said, "I'd swear this was the dark mark of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named." Just then a huge Barn owl came through her open window and dropped a heavy letter of parchment on her bed and left as immediately as he came. "A letter? Who would be sending me a letter?", she said aloud. She went over and opened the letter and read:
Dear Miss Elizabeth Riddle,
"Me? I have been invited to Hogwarts? Do you know what this means, Diane? All I know of my grandfather is he attended that school with grandma. I can find out who he is," said Elizabeth in utter excitement.
Her grandmother decided to let her go. They sent her stuff ahead of time so she could just travel by floo powder to the host families house.
"Write me," said her grandmother.
"I will," said Elizabeth.
"I know why you're really going - to find out who your grandfather is. Once you do, you'll understand why I've been hiding it all these years. Now what's the name of your host family again?"
"It just says the Weasley family."
"Well have a good time," said her grandmother with one final hug. And into the fire she went, thoughts going through her mind as the world rushed by her. I can have a fresh start here, she thought. She didn't have to be a nobody anymore.
Chapter 2 ~ The Weasleys
It seemed like it was taking forever to get there. Then, BAM! She was there. She staggered for a moment, then walked out of the fireplace to meet her host family, while trying to get some of the soot off of her clothes.
"Welcome Elizabeth," said a nice looking woman with firey red hair like the rest of her family had. "I'm Molly Wealsey," said the woman, "And this is my husband Arthur, our sons Percy, Fred, George, Ron, and our daughter Ginny. Welcome to the Burrow." Elizabeth walked toward the family to receive the extended hand she was offered when she remembered the mess she had made. "Oh my gosh! I'm sorry. Let me help you clean this mess up," Elizabeth said.
Mrs. Wealsey said, "Don't worry dear," she whispered something under her breath, waved her wand and POOF! The mess was gone. "Come on Elizabeth, Ron will show you around the Burrow. He will be in most of your classes at Hogwarts." And just like that the family was on the move, back to whatever they were doing before she arrived. And she was left all alone with Ron. "Come on then, I'll show you around," he said. She could tell by the tone of his voice that he was nervous, but so was she.
The Burrow was amazing. A lot bigger than her grandmothers small two bedroom apartment. She would be staying in Ginny's room. Ron explained to her that in a week his friend Harry would be staying with them and a week before they were going to Hogwarts his friend Hermione would be staying as well. Elizabeth some how gathered all her courage together and asked Ron, "Do you mean Harry Potter?"
"Yes," he said, "Harry and Hermione are my very best friends. Elizabeth, would you like to play a game of Quidditch before lunch?", he said.
"Sure, but you can call me Lizzy, all my friends do," when she said this a thought went through her mind, "What friends?"
"Remember," she told herself, 'Here you don't have to be a nobody if you don't want to."
Chapter 3 ~ Meeting Harry
Elizabeth had been staying with the Weasley family for almost a week now. She loved it there at the Burrow. Everyone treated her as if she were a part of their family. Today she would meet the most famous wizard in the world, Harry Potter. She could hardly wait to meet him. From Ron's stories of all their adventures he seemed like a real nice guy.
"Ron?" she said.
"Yeah, Lizzy?"
"How is Harry going to get here?"
"Oh, he's coming on the Knight bus later," he said.
And sure enough later that night around midnight he came.
"Harry," said Mrs. Weasley, "This is the student we told you about, Elizabeth Riddle."
At hearing this name Harry flinched. Something about that name didn't set right in his mind. Flashes of just a few months earlier returned to his mind, but a headstone stood out in the sudden blur of pictures. He tried to make out what it said, then it hit him like a ton of bricks, Tom Riddle! When he came out of his sudden daze he could see everyone was starring at him blankly.
"Sorry, I guess I'm just a bit tried from the ride," he said trying to cover up what had just happened. Harry extended a hand to Elizabeth, but when their hands touched a sudden burst of pain shot through both of them, they jumped back and screamed in agony. It felt as though each of them had just held a hot coal in their hand.
"I knew there was something about you that didn't sound right," said Harry through his teeth. "Your last name is Riddle, the same as Voldemort's!"
"I don't know what you mean," said Elizabeth trying to fight back tears that were already there.
Keeping focused on the two children, the Weasley family didn't notice that someone else had come into the room, but now he made his presence known. He threw a powerful sleeping spell on the whole family, he would kill them later he wanted to save his power for the two children who had just realized what had happened. Both Harry and Elizabeth pulled out their wands ready to fight the most feared dark wizard in the world, Lord Voledmort.
Chapter 4 ~ Elizabeth's Grandfather
"So, we meet again Potter," said Lord Voldemort. "You," he said pointing to Elizabeth, "come here." Elizabeth just stood there frozen with fear. Voldemort said a few words under his breath and suddenly
Elizabeth could hear a voice in her head that said, "Walk toward him". And she began to move forward.
"What is your name?," he asked when she reached him.
"E-Eliza-abeth R-R-iddle," she stammered in a whisper.
"No," he said, looking away suddenly. Then he grabbed her and lifted up her shirtsleeve, and there it was. Her birthmark that her grandfather had as well. Now Elizabeth understood why her grandmother had kept her grandfather's identity a secret. Her grandfather is the darkest wizard of all time, Lord Voldemort!
He released her and said, "So, this is a surprise. I just thought I was going to take care of Potter over there, but now my legacy can continue with you my granddaughter. Come, join me Elizabeth, and help me rule the world."
"Never", said Elizabeth backing slowly back toward Harry.
"I'll ask you one more time," he said starting to get angry, "will you join me and live or go against me and die." Elizabeth thought this over. She finally knew who her grandfather was, but should she throw their relationship out the window before she even really gets to know him? She looked at Harry for support. Should she go along with the forces of evil and live? Or the forces of good and die?
"My patience is wearing thin," he said. She knew what she had to do. I guess Harry had gotten the same idea she had. They both raised their wands and shouted, "AVADA KEDAVRA!!" And, "KABOOM!!!" The entire house exploded.
For a moment nothing and no one stirred. Then people started emerging from the rubble. The Weasley family and then Harry, and finally Elizabeth. They were all alright. "What happened?", said Mrs. Wealsey.
"We'll explain later," said Harry, "we need to find Lord Voldemort." They searched and searched. Elizabeth was the one to find him. He was dead. She couldn't believe it. She and Harry had killed Lord Voldemort, the most powerful dark wizard of his time, her grandfather. Harry came over and put a hand on her shoulder to comfort her.
"You had to do it," he said, "Wait a sec. I'm touching you and it's not burning, like earlier. What happened?"
"When he died, the curse died with him," said Elizabeth.
"How do you know that?" he asked.
"I don't know, I don't think we'll ever really know," said Elizabeth while getting up as the Muggle's fire department arrived, as well as the Ministry to do some damage control.
