First Snow
Ruby Lee Mitchell
Sometime last night snow began to fall, So gently did it come, so softly white; Its music we failed to hear at all As it whispered its song to the listening night.
The star snowflakes still swirl about, Veiling the barn and the pasture-lot; Veiling the view when I look out Of the distant lake and maple plot.
The evergreens with snow are spread,
Drifts push up against the wall. Each post wears a nightcap on its head, Everything's dressed in the new snowfall.
It is good to be in this world of white, Silent but for the murmur of the snow And the sighing of my wood fire bright That makes my kitchen all aglow.
It is pure and beautiful outside - Within, my room is cozy and warm. A sense of peace with me abides As I look out at the first snowstorm.
