Wedding Chapel
In Holy Wedlock
Gladys Palmer Eby
"I take thee, loved one, to be my wedded wife
From this time on, for beetter or worse;
For richer.....for poorer."
And in the congregation, many hands clasped,
Bejeweled hands and plain repose in quiet grace
Because their life was good.
"For poorer," did he say? Faded eyes cast down
As one reflects on bygone futile dreams
Somehow beyond fulfilling.
"In sickness and in health," the vow of two untried,
A smiling bride of roses and of youth,
A man of confidence.
But silently one weeps, mellowed thoughts are his
That span the years of brooding tenderness
In sickness and in health.
A hundred prayers go heavenward so santify the faith
Of bride and groom who vow till death do part,
"I'll love and cherish thee."
"Thereto I plight thee my troth," the timeless pledge is made,
While candles burn and the organ softly plays
Of moonlight, hearts, and flowers.
Descend, God's blessing, hover near this comely pair
And fill their love with strength and many days,
All thine own creation.
