1967 S.L.H.S. Red Hatters

In August of 1966, a new high school on Bayou Lafourche was opened. South Lafourche High School was ready for occupancy! For the previous 3 years, we had meetings, voted, more meetings, discussions, more votes. We voted on school colors and mascot. We voted on whether or not we wanted to be the first seniors there, or let them take their time and let the class of '68 be first! I don't think too many voted not to be the first graduating class! And of course, eventually, we voted on the song that you hear right now to be our Class Song, "Born Free". So, long before we finished out our Junior, and last, year at our old school, we were getting ready to be the first Senior Class of South Lafourche High School. Somewhere around 100 of the graduates were girls. Being that some of us went to Golden Meadow High and others to LCO High, there were old friends, and new friends. So, some of us knew each other only for the senior year. It will be very interesting to see how many respond to the "call" from the Red Hat Society to come and join in on all the fun and getting to know each other again, or for the first time!!

On the go, and having so much fun!

Bottom row, seated, left to right are:Ann, Phyllis, Brenda, Jeanette, Cindy and Peggy. Middle row, from left to right: Cyn, Paula & Maudrey. Very top are Gwen (Queen Mum), Linda, and Elaine, hiding between the posts! She's our Vice Queen Mum.

In May of 2004, the S.L.'s '67 Red Hatters got together for the first time. We had 12 in the group. We had lunch at Copeland's in Houma and had such a wonderful time getting to know each other again. Some of the group have remained friends through the years, and some of us had not seen each other in a very long time.
The Red Hat Society was started in 1998, on a whim, by Sue Cooper. She was inspired by the poem, "Warning" by Jenny Joseph. I have read Sue's book, "The Red Hat Society, Fun & Friendship after 50", and I must say that I couldn't put it down. I think every one should read this book! If you are a man and have a woman, be it wife, sister or mother, in your life, READ THIS BOOK! If you are a woman, READ THIS BOOK! If you are a teenager and think your Mother or Grandmother has gone bonkers, READ THIS BOOK! It makes so much sense about how we feel, what we need at our age, and just lots and lots of great stuff. So, borrow it or buy it! But read it!
