PREVIEW TRAILERS


To promote the upcoming stories the BBC had trailers made that would show footage from episode one of the following serial, usually because episode one was the only installment completed at the time. However some trailers often featured specially filmed material for a particular serial. Below is a list of trailers I have managed to track down, however it should be pointed out that this list is far from complete – if a story isn't mentioned here it doesn't necessarily mean it didn't have a trailer.

SERIAL: The Dalek Invasion of Earth (1) (Season Two)

DETAILS: Since this story was held over from the previous year, the BBC were able to make two trailers & utilize footage from all six episodes.

DETAILS: Since this story was held over from the previous year, the BBC were able to make two trailers & utilize footage from all six episodes.

DETAILS: Apparently contained footage of a Zarbi checking into the BBC to collect it's room keys...

DETAILS: Details unknown. Most likely contained footage from the first episode, although as with The Dalek Invasion of Earth this serial was made during season two so it is possibly footage from all four episodes may have been utilised.

DETAILS: The trailer was found in June 2003 at the end of a programme broadcast the night before Power of the Daleks 1 went to air, and features footage from Episode 1.

RELEASED: No

DETAILS: Details unknown. Most likely contained footage from the first episode. Unsure of exact duration as well.

 

SERIAL: The Faceless Ones (Season Four)

DETAILS: Shown immediately after the end credits faded on The Faceless Ones 6, this trailer showed Jamie and the Doctor chasing the Tardis being driven off in the lorry, stopping out of breath. A male announcer says 'Next week, Doctor Who begins a new adventure..' Dialogue between Doctor and Jamie discussing the loss of the Tardis. There was also footage of the Dalek materializing from the end of The Evil of the Daleks 1. The trailer ends with the title card and the time, 5.15.

 

SERIAL: The Tomb of the Cybermen (Season Five)

RELEASED: No

DETAILS: The week before the serial aired, a special preview tape showed close ups of several cybermats scuttling from the right to left on a grey studio floor. This footage was specially filmed and did not appear in the serial. It was played out on videotape and came with a voice over: "Next week Doctor Who faces a new threat in the form of the deadly Cybermats". The title 'DOCTOR WHO - 5.15' then appeared before fading to black.

 

SERIAL: The Abominable Snowmen (Season Five)

RELEASED: Included on The Tomb of the Cybermen DVD

DETAILS: The shot showing a sudden zoom into yetis face standing by Tardis (episode 4) was used as a preview, with again 'DOCTOR WHO - 5.15' below.

 

SERIAL: The Ice Warriors (Season Five)

DURATION: 1'15"

ARCHIVE STATUS: AUDIO ONLY

RELEASED: TBA

DETAILS: Contained specially shot material involving Clent & Penley talking about the ice age and contained footage of an Ice Warrior breaking out of ice. Not sure if this is the same shot of Varga breaking free at the end of episode 1, or specially shot material.

 

SERIAL: The Enemy of the World (Season Five)

DURATION: 1'00"

ARCHIVE STATUS: AUDIO ONLY

RELEASED: Included on the BBC Audio release of The Ice Warriors

DETAILS: Details unknown. Most likely contained footage from the first episode.

 

SERIAL: The Web of Fear (Season Five)

DETAILS: Contained specially shot material of Patrick Troughton sitting on a platform of a subway station, warning kids that this story may be scary for adults.

 

SERIAL: Fury from the Deep (Season Five)

DETAILS: A film sequence showing the Doctor's trio walking along a beach was shown. This was followed by the Doctor examining the pipeline and hearing a heart beat. The heart beat remained over a shot of waves crashing in on the shore, as it appeared at the beginning of episode 1. 'DOCTOR WHO - 5.15' was faded at the bottom of the shot of the waves, which faded to black.

SERIAL: The Wheel in Space (Season Five)

DURATION: 43"

ARCHIVE STATUS: AUDIO ONLY

RELEASED: TBA

DETAILS: After a shot of the wheel spinning in space, we had a sequence where a solarized cyber silhouette is seen materialising inside the egg. The preview ended on the hand emerging from the egg, with a voice over identifying the Cybermen. The title card of 'DOCTOR WHO - 5.15' was used again.

 

SERIAL: The Dominators (Season Six)

DETAILS: A shot of Ronald Allen, with the humped back appeared, followed by shot going into close up of a quarks head as it loomed up over a hill top (film stock). The trailer acted as a season preview rather than an introduction to this story. The Voice over announced "The Dominators and the Quarks".
