The Pearl
By John Steinbeck
Quotes
Kino: "I am a man"
Kino: "This pearl has become my soul. If I give it up
I shall lose my soul."
Juana: "Kino, this pearl is evil. Let us destroy it
before it destroys us. Let us crush it between two stones. Let us - let us throw
it back in the sea where it belongs. Kino, it is evil, it is evil!"
My
Summary
The Pearl is the story of Kino, a poor fisherman, and Juana, his
wife, who find a huge pearl worth a lot of money. When a scorpion was spotted
slowly moving down the rope of the hanging box, where Coyotito, Kino and Juana's
baby, slept, Kino made a slow dash toward the box, but Coytito laughed shaking
the rope of the hanging box. The scorpion fell, striking Coyotito on the
shoulder. When Kino and Juana found the pearl of the world, they thought that it
would bring them good luck, but instead, they finds that the pearl is slowly
destroying their lives. Finially at the end of the story, Kino and Juana rid
themselvs of the pearl, and all the evil that it brings, by throwing it in the
sea.
My Opinion
The story, The Pearl, is a literary
masterpiece. The discriptive vocabularay allows you to be right in the story
with Kino, a poor fisherman, and Juana, his wife. For example, "Kino awakened in
the near dark. The stars still shone and the day had drawn only a pale wash of
light in the lower sky to the east." At times the story would become a little
confusing, but for the most part it was easy reading. John Steinbeck is an
exceptional writer, and I very much enjoyed The Pearl!
